Those of m1r ~eade:'O who _are looking forward to a return of pre-war prices and conditions are doomed to bitter disap- pointment. There can be no return of pre-war conditions dur- il1g the life-time of anyone now living. Prices are going to be permanently lligher or Cl.ollurs permanently eheaper-which- ever way you c.hoose to state the case. · No amount of competition will ever make it :practical for business to be conducted at a loss.·.All business activity 1vill be limited for many months to coirie--not by high prices-but by the difficulty of obtaining anything you want at any price at all, Howeve1', ii everyone will quit loafi11g and go to work and abandon the notion of living at the e\-\?ense ·of taxpayers, you won't know you a:te living in the same world one year from now. JI/Iany scarce items V\ill be in abundant supply and there will be more manufacturers and trades people who will again be glad to sell you such commodities as you need at some price. By the end of 1947 we should at least get back to a situation where it does not cost you quite so much effort to spend your money for things that you need as it cost you in the first :place to earn the money with which to pay for your wants. Much of our legalistic Ted tape and regimentation sl1o1.lid disappear before the end of 1947. The govermnent of the United States cannot do too much to promote prosperity during 1947. It's up to the people-- young and old-to go back to ·work and bring production to a high peak. · It's U::p to the people--young and old-to learn the lesson that paper money is not wealtl1. It's the things we all produce that constitutes the wealth of the nation and a nation made up largely of drones and slackers can never get to \first base\ in promoting an era of prosperity and abundance. The period of sabre rattling has now passed into history. There isn't going to be another war in the near fLlture and there will not be another war in the foreseeable future unless our \home grown\ jingoes are able to build up sentiment for war through the years. The new United Nations is off to a good start. It is really going to work and to insure a long period of· uninterrupted :peace. Now if we can maintain peace and build up industry and thrift on the \home front\ all will go well. Service ·Designed For Yott!
