The event, following the nine o'clock Mass winch the Kni- ghts attended in a body, was the first of a full day of activities which maiked Sunday as Knights of Columbas Day in Lowviile In the afternoon, 120 candidates were conferred the third degree of the Catholic men's oider and the class was named the Matthew T. Beck Class m honor of the Grand Knight of the Rev. C J. McMorrow Council of Lowviile. Preceding the conferring of the degree at St. Peter's Church over 600 Knights of Columbus, the village band, the Lowville Aca- demy and Central School band, inarched from the schools grounds to St Peter's Church where Ben- ediction was held. Dignitaries at the speakers ta- [ ble at the Communion Breakfast} at Clayton and Lloyd Gosier, 63, foi 36 yeais a Knight of Columbus jn the LeRay deChaumont Coun- cil; Aloyisus Reif, 54, for 36 years a member of the same council and Clarence Nugent, 51, who for 30 years has been a member of the V\£atertown Council. Tribute was also paid to Will- iam Burkhard, recently deceased who was a Knight of Columbus at Croghan for 30 years. His Excellency Bishop Mclnter- gert told the Knights of the dire lack of new priests m the North Country and urged them to be on the alert and ever ready to encourage young men of promise into choosing the priesthood as their life's work. Paul Kaufmann, son of I m his night clothes. He drove to Mr. and Mrs. Victor Kaufmann^ arrived hom e Tuesday to spend a week before reporting: fo;r duty at Ft. Lewis, Washington, on May 17. LARK* CANNAN LEAVES FOR- DUTY AFTER VISIT HERE Cpl Larry J. Cannan, son of Mr. and Mrs Anselm S Cannan, who has been home on furlough from. Korea, left last Sunday for Chan- ute Air Force Base, Illinois. to Indian River, where he called the fire department. When the fir e men arrived, the house was com- pletely enveloped in flame All contents of the house were lost. The only source of water was a nearby well. Firemen wet down burning embers of the house and the barn until the water supply ran out. A strong wind, which was lowing away from the barn, was credited with saving that struc- ture.
