SNOWMOBILE Registrations Set Record Level In 1972 1 1 0 .0 0 0 Snowmobile! W8 f* registered with UieStateofMisw York during °*e 1971-72 season. Yet, according to the following figure!, the State of New York Is doing i ts b e s t to outlaw snow m obiles; 180.000 registered sleds at $5.00 each equals$800,000. The average sled consumes 100 gals, gas at $ .40 average plus 20 q ts. of oil at $ .75 average p e r aeasooequals3.64 (average tax per sled x 180,000 equals $855,200 (tax on gas & on) 30,000 registered snowmobile tra i l e r s in New York S tate at $5.00 registration fee equals 30,000 x $5 equals $150,000. The average co s t to r replacem e n t p a r ts is $40 per year per snowmobile which yields $40 % 180,000 equals $7,200,000 x 4% N.Y.S. Sales, Tax equals $1,080,000. Now this total figure does not include local county and city taxes or taxes paid (or motels, restaurants,, c a r s ' and trucks’ fuel o r anv of the other snowmobile related' taxes, which would apply. Equals? The abbreviated total paid to New York State (as shown here) d u ring the 1971-72 season l s . $3,073,200. Of course, not included, are the sales taxes paid on the snowmobiles and tra i le r s them selves. Figuring over ten years, 180,000 plus 30,000 tra i le r s ($900 average per sled and $200 average p e r trailer). 3% N.Y.S, Sales Tax paid on $162,- 000,000 worht of snowmobiles equal $4,860,000 (paid in taxes) 32- n ,y .s . Sales Tax paid on $6,000,000 worth of snowmobile trailers equal $180,000 (paid in Taxes), $5,040,000 plus 3.- 073,200 (1971-72 season) $8,113,200, L e t's say the eombinalionof the taxes paid in the years from i960 through 1970 totaled five tim e s what was paid ta 1971, Which would be conservative, the total paid in s a les taxes would be equal $40,566,000, The total Of ail the program s Instituted by the Albany govern ment do not total $40,000,000 or $4,000,000 o r even $1,000,000. According to som e , this does not make sense - if there a r e so many problem s associated with snowmobiles as the legislature and critics say, yet s o much revenue generated by them - why not try to educate and enlighten the snowmobtter r a th e r than legislate him out of existence. Snow Suits Suits Need Care Snowmobile suits, jackets and pants should be washed o r dry cleaned before storing, any salt or dirt left on the material will weaken the fabric. Wash the tops of the boots and rinse the boots out, but dry thoroughly. How about banging those liners out side for a good airing, M ost all m itts can be washed with cool water and mild soap then drip dried. This goes for any hoods that have man-made fur trim , brush the fur after drying. Polish your helmentwithagood wax. Does anyohe know what can be used to take the scratches out of the plastic visors o r goggles? It so, let us know. Now that everything is nice and clean, store all your snow mobile gear ta one spot. There Is nothing more frustrating as having to tear your closets apart looking for a lost hoot or mitt when that first snow hits the ground. ■ ' . It is clothing that meets four basic require ments against the elements! lightweight; a mobility and free dom of movement; water repel- lency; and, most important, warmth. Other type ofdress-woolhunt- tag clothes and eater ski wear- may offer warmth. However, stace snowmohillng differs from other types of winter sport, Its proper clothes are- somewhat specialized. Wool hunting clothes are usually heavy and don't provide enough protection from the wind when one ts traveling at high speed*!. AlfiO, they tend to soak up water and melting sr.ow, Sid wear Is a little closer to proper snowmobile wear, but It IS usually too tight fitting for the snowmobller. The proper snowmobile suit should be a two-piece outfit or £ one-piece jump suit. They are water repellent, extremely light ta weight and provide excellent protection from cold and wins because ot their hard-ttalsbed exteriors. Most experienced sno* mobllers also prefer snowmobile boots with removable felt liners, although other types, tocludtagskl or hunting boots, could be used. The snowmobile boot has a water proof exterior and some have drawstring tops to keep out scow and ice. Be certain that your mittens are heavy and warm, butflexlhle. Mittens are preferred since they maintain body heat Better than gloves. Helmets should be worn for safety's sake as should® wool face mask and goggles. Goggles should be of the non-fogging variety to insure visibility under all conditions. A healthy respect for the elements will increase the entire family’s snowmobiltaE enjoy ment.
