So when he ., i firmly believetbat shl^etiheup and he finished and Linda Mezey built the River Valley Ian, they made sure there were me off. They do it all the rhne. plenty of places to belly up, 18 to be exact. ;AB* « ; seem' 1 ; %HeTeaIly taBcs Just Like Old Times at the River Valley Inn By Andy Byrnes here's a new sign and a new building on the Burdick's Crossing Road, you know the one, it's behind the drive-inniOvie screen there off Route 12. The sigh says 'Mver$&ffll|yton', but;i56^t*fp1^;jtjs^, say RVif when they talk about the place. Everything sure looks pretty new inside, too, but it doesn't feel that way at all. Everybody seems to know everybody else. Everyone who walks in the front door either gets a big hello or yelled at or kidded v^th depending upon their last exploit. It's almost as though the plate has been there for years. Well, it has, in a way. Linda Mezey and Dick Ferrance used to own and operate the Central. Hotel to GJenfield, thene^i: town over. For 18 years, in fact,. Wait a minute. What are these people, gluttons for-punishment? They sell a bar in one town and finally get rid of all those headaches, all those late nights, the softball teams, the pitch tournaments and they turn around and start all over again? \1 had to have something to do until I retire,\ laughs DiCk Ferrance. \Dickie you've been retircjda long time now, honey,\ chides Linda Mezey. Dick and Linda have been sharing quarters now for longer than either one of them will a^mit, \Ahdy you can tell , eh»tye*rthvln , in sin if you want to,\ said Linda.; \Very little sin.\ Weft, back on the subject, The place is open and spacious witha.seattci|r. capacity of SO, countingcthe longhar along the right side. ,'*.«.'. ^ ... _. \Wf ve got a good long bar (Seats ; : - 18),\ said-Dick, \i ..always hated 1 walking into a place? with a little bar that you (^d^ i ^eh.^to./Yo^lmp^q^]}_ : gotta reach'bver sb^ohsSoget ^St *- drink andiheh s^aho^^ Your hosts are generally behind the bar (They have one weekend bartender, Martha Beadore) and they serve lunch staples and fast food all daylong. , \We'vegbtburgei-s chicken wings, We're se1rvmj^brealcfast v me5^M^s'' > otf * Saturday and Sunday from 7 am 'til noon. Don't they know how tough it is, between the Department of Health and the Liquor Laws and the licenses and the taxes? . \I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, to tell you the truth,\ said Linda'. h I wouldn't want to do anything else. The people around here have been very good to us. \ '. \You know? I don't really think of most of 'em as customers. They're friends. They cpme here to socialize. That's why we.|ry to be here as much as possible.\ \We get a lot of sleds (snowmobiles) here in the wintertime,\ said Dick. \And that stuffs grayy. But it's the local people - that's what makes or breaks you. We've always stressed our local people. They're^ the backbone of any business.
