Lowville Soccer Team has 'Roller Coaster' Season By Stephen Virkler Talk about a \roller coaster\ season. Early this season, the Lowville Academy varsity soccer team tied a tough Carthage squad (the eventual Frontier League regular season champion) but then lost enough games to knock themselves out of playoff and sectional contention... or so they thought. Then, around the middle of the season, two losses to Watertown and Watertown IHC became wins when both Watertown schools had to forfeit a number of games because they had ineligible players on their teams (both players were too old). Head coach Daniel Cushing said that getting these games back \put us on sort of a roller coaster ride for awhile because our hopes obviously were [increased] when we got a couple of wins, and the playoffs looked like a possibility. And then they were dashed when we didn't make the playoffs. Then they were back up when we thought we were going to make sectionals, and then they were dashed when we didn't make sectionals.\ According to Cushing, the reason the Raiders planned on making it to the sectionals but didn't was because of a misunderstanding at the annual Columbus Day postseason tournament at Poland. Lowville won the first game to advance to the championship game against Poland. The Raiders tied Poland through regulation and overtime, so they \went to penalty kicks to determine who was going to get trophies\ from the sponsor of the tournament. Unfortunately, Poland won the shootout by one goal (one goal was controversially taken away from Lowville), but both coaches thought that the game would be officially counted a tie anyway. However, \Section HI has a ruling that, in any tournament, if you proceed to shootouts to deterrnine trophies that you must declare a winner and a loser, and, on that account, we ended up with one more loss^'' With the loss, Lowville went from 7-7-2 to 7-8-1 on the season. According to Section III rules, any soccer team that finishes over .500 is included in sectional play. Since, excluding Lowville, there were an even number of teams with above .500 records, the sectional committee decided not to include Lowville in the sectional tournament. Cushing said that he felt the \kids were disappointed\ to finish the season that way, especially since they had practiced so hard in anticipation of a sectional berth. Senior halfback/stopper Galen Moshier did seem to be fairly disappointed about the quick ending to the season. However, he hopes that this will be a learning experience for the underclassmen. He felt that there was \just something missing\ for most of the season and hopes that, next year, the team will workhafder and. gel j, quicker earlier in the season I •'\ / / Speaking of underclassmen, there were a lot of them on this year's Raider team. \This was probably the youngest team we've ever had at Lowville,\ said Cushing. \It included five sophomore starters and a sixth one that got a lot of playing time off the bench.\ Because of this \youth movement,\ the team's ability to be competitive with all their opponents, and their improvement in work ethic and skills, Cushing feels \very good about the future and very good about this bunch.\ Looking at this year's team, Cushing feels there was a \real team effort,\ with large contributions corning from much of the team. Cushing did cite \outstanding contributions from our young people (sophomores):\ forward Scott Rupert, who led the team in scoring, outside halfbacks Mike Beller and Andy Gates, forward/stopper Andy Bishop, and Joel Pyland, who was \rock solid at sweeper.\ He also said that juniors like fullback Marcus Hetsher and center halfback Ryan Samsa \stepped in and contributed.\ However, he especially pointed to \senior leadership\ from Rob Misek, Will Lautenschlager, Jason Ischia, Galen Moshier, and Andy Scott as critical for the team's success and development. Cushing felt the Raiders' fans \were very understanding in terms of their expectations.\ They realized that Lowville was in a \rebuilding\ phase and didn't give up on the team when things weren't going well. If the team continues to mature like it did this season, Lowville soccer boosters should really have something to cheer about in the next couple of seasons. _j_i.^n.tjiinLLiQn Ji*; } .jjii i.rviS.<fiiL**H-iL'-.-\'r•-.----•/•-\-• ••mi. ii.i Last Ditch Effort OUT OF REACH - fieaite* Rivetf'isChris Kempney (No. 27) goes up against two thousand Island defenders for a second half Emerson Lyndaker pass last Saturday, but it was a little too short and a little too late.
