Adirondack Mountain Sun Friday, Nov. 6, 1992 Letters From the Editor Is this the thanks I get? One letter? It's all I've been able to think about all week long, thank you. Tm an editor now, I should get letters. Oh sure, I got one. One stinkin' letter and it doesn't even mention my name. It doesn't even acknowledge my existence. It's all about Dave McCauIey. \Dave McCauley this. Dave McCauley that.\ Big deal. What do you want? You want me to crawl? Forget it. Besides I have to start apologizing for other stuff so I may as well get on with that. Nice life I got here, bein' a editor. Everybody yelled at me last week because the paper was late. I'm sorry. I didn't know when it was going to come out, did I? It was my first one. And granted, my distribution department leaves a little bit to be desired, but I'm never borrowing that guy's truck again, believe me. I'll try to borrow a better one next time. I do have a confession to make. I never really went out and established a delivery route before last Friday. Well, I figured I didn't have any papers to sell' yet and it was going to be pretty hard to convince people to sell something that was nothing but thin air as far as they were concerned, so I figured Td wait until I had something to sell. Are you with me? So. it might have taken me a little longer to get around last Friday because, truth be known, I had no idea where I was going from one minute to the next. My typical stop went something like this; „ \Hey hi, good morning, would you like to put some of these newspapers on your counter - to sell. It's brand new and it's called the Adirondack Mountain Sun and it's a really terrific paper.\ \Paper?\ \Yeah well, actually it's more of a magazine, really. It doesn't actually have up to the minute news. It's a weekly, you know? It's got great articles about people of the north country and issues that concern all of us and sports, stuff like that.\ \No news, huh?' \Well I wouldn't exactly say that, it's really informa-\ \Got any crossword puzzles in it?\ \Ahh no. No crossword puzzle. That is, no crossword puzzle yet. Yeah, right. Not yet, but I'm working on one now. I'm talking to a guy over where they make dictionaries. In fact I'm supposed to call him this afternoon.\ \When can you get it in?\ \Well probably by next week. I don't see why there should be -\ \Come back next week then, when you got it.\ And that's pretty much how it went. Everybody wanted something that I hadn't thought of yet. They wanted crossword puzzles, they wanted recipes, they wanted horoscopes. They even wanted a weather report. \It's gonna rain,\ I told a guy at the top of my lungs. (I was very close to the edge at that point) \That don't tell me nothin' I don't already know,\ he said. Look, somebody out there has got to be reading this. I've got tools. I can work. I've got a chauffeur's license, Til go back to driving trucks. I know how to roof. I can carry shingles. All I need is a chance. Before I forget, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to a woman I barely know named Mary Piatt, She saw my predicament last Friday and offered to deliver papers for me to C'ville. She not only opened two new accounts (who would probably have thrown me out) but she called the office during the week to tell me they needed more papers. Don't think that stuff goes unnoticed, Mary. You wrote that a young man who played for him 20 years ago had made a great success of himself and realizing that was Coach McCauley's reward. I can tell you first hand that this coach really does take a tremendous interest in his people (probably alot more than some parents) and will go to great lengths to...receive his reward, i.e. see his young people succeed. He may be a bit harsh at times, but that is exactly what most of our kids need. I first was exposed to Coach McCauley about five years ago when he was probably a bit down because South Lewis did not have a team to field that year. I called him to tell him that he had support, not only from me but from many others I had spoken to. He replied that the phone • call meant a great deal to him. I have since had my son go through two years at South Lewis under Coach McCauley-and I support him more than ever now* This man needs and deserves our support! He's good for our kids. He's good for our upcoming generation. Leo T.
