16 Adirondack Mountain Sun Friday, Nov. 6/1992 Tokyo Scientists OrderMo^Jfangs -•- ><•• o I'm not looking to provoke any international incidents , or anything. Pm not really into \bashing' anyone as any faithful reader of (his column will acknowledge, but I suspect that the orientals .of the world may have very possibly taken leave of their senses. First of all, a recent article in the local daily entitled 'Quake-Sensing Catfish Put Out To Pasture', chronicled the adventures of a, bunch of catfish who were ostensibly used to predict earthquakes in Tokyo for 16 years. I'm not talking about 16 years during the Ming Dynasty, now. I'm not talking about any old 16 years. I'm talking about the last 16 years, during which space exploration and stuff took place. ftn serious. Japanese researchers watched a bunch of catfish swim around (sluggishly I might add) every day, 24 hours a day for sixteen years ID-see if one of them would swim up to the glass one day and say Tally no, chaps. Here it comes and I'd say it's a good eight or nine on die old Richter scale. Better hop to it if you expect to save your families.\ These guys made more sense when they were making Godzilla movies. They didn't rely on catfish to predict when Godzilla was coming, did drey? And he came out of the ocean. And get this - Last year the project cost $60,000. Let's see, that's 16 times 60,000, O.K., carry the nine , six, seven, eight - that's $960,000. (I used my calculator. I only pretended to do it in my head. I'm sorry. I feel as foolish as a Japanese catfish watching earthquake researcher). That's almost one million dollars. And how do they explain it. Oh, that's simple. \In Japan, there is a widespread belief that catfish become more active before earthquakes,\ said Yasuo Baba of the Tokyo Metropolitan Marine Experiment Station. What could be simpler than dial? \Hey Yukio! I've got a great idea. Let's go blow $960,000 on a widespread belief.\ That's terrific. If you've ever watched a Tarzan movie, you know diat elephants become more active before forest fires. I don't see any African researchers sitting around watching a bunch of captive elephants in case of a foe, do you? And those guys still believe in witch doctors! Of course, the Japanese are still pretty clever in some ways. 1 mean, a catfish can't exactly trample an entire village if die experiment goes terribly wrong. You're probably wondering at this point why - why after 16 years of diligently attempting to predict earthquakes - why, when they were all so close to retirement (I mean, Uiey're civil servants aren't they?) were die slimy little devils fired. Malingering, plain and simple. After all Uiose years of being on die arm, a burden to the Tokyo taxpayers, they didn't predict a darn thing. Oh, they picked up the tempo a little bit before about 31% of the quakes, but they couldVe done that by simply suspecting that they would get fired if tbey didn't perk up occasionally, One or two of them are actually litigating for their vested rights, apparently. Anyhow, the cadish experiment is a thing of the past in Tokyo now. They've apparendy decided upon a more sciendfic approach. I read somewhere diat die Tokyo Metropolitan Geological Experiment Station ordered a gross of mood rings. I just read somettiing about the Chinese, too. Apparently, dogs have been raised in stature from common Hors D'oeuvres to house, pets.
