Mater Dei College Extension News Mater Dei College, Gouverneur Extension, established in 1982, is alive and well at its 223 E. Main Street address. Enrollment is up after a brief leveling off period and student activities are much in evidence. The concept of offering two year college programs in a neighborhood setting to make it more accessible to rural area people fills a significant need in Gou- verneur and surrounding communities. Colleges have a positive economic impact on the communi- ties in which they exist. Less evident is the more subtle impact of students, who take pride in their campus and develop strong feelings of respon- sibility for their image at the main campus and in the community. The Student Gavern- tnent Association (SGA) recently elected officers for the 1989/90 academic year. William June is the new president; Allen Young, vice president; Sherry Youngs, secretary; and Shelly Sprouse, treas- urer. All are local resi- dents. The first major project on their agenda is a Hal- loween Party for children in Gouverneur and sur- rounding communities. The party ifc planned for 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at the Main Street Campus. Five girls were recently inducted into the Colle- giate Secretaries Interna- tional (CSI) organization. CSI is sponsored by Pro- Macomb Hikers 4-H News The Macomb Hikers 4- H Club met Oct. 14. Bush, and Eugene Fuller. By Tammy Hays FFA Reporter Students in the Gou- verneur High School agri- culture and conservation classes attended a land judging contest Oct. 4, at the Bruce Nichols farm on the Black Lake Road near Ogdensburg. The Gouverneur team consisted of Eugene Fuller, Elliott Bush, Robert Claflin, Shawn Abrantes and Nate Ro- gers. The team placed first, and Eugene Fuller was the first-place indi- vidual out of 161 students. Elliot Bush placed sixth, and Shawn Abrantes placed 10th, individually. Others who judged were Ashley Fuller, Steve Bre- sett, Garrett Williams, Earl Simmons, Darren Love, Tim Platt, Jeff Al- len, Chad Burns, Heidi Rinehart, Jennifer Larsen, Forrest Hays, Chris Dusharm, John Jenkins, Kathy Lamica, Tammy Hays, Andy Peck, Cory Simmons, Ronnie Mashaw and Ray Holcomb. The object of judging the soil is to determine how well drained the soil is and what crops would grow best there. There are dif- ferent ways tojmprove the land — by constructing a diversion ditch, using a sub-soiler or attempting plowing techniques. Awards will be given out at Edwards-Knox School later in October. : OPEN AT LAST...
