Wednesday, June 14,1989 3 Sections - 48 Pages - 35 Cents Final Selection Due by July 1 6 Still In Running for Top School Administrator Job By Lisa L* Reape The Gouverneur School District Board of Educa- tion has narrowed its choice for superintendent to six candidates, down from a field of 26, accord- ing to Board President Nancy Cappellino. Those six candidates were asked to appear be- fore the full board for inter- views Monday and Tues- day nights. As of press time, the board had not decided on what step to take next. \We won't know that until all of the candidates have been interviewed,\ Mrs. Cappellino said. Mrs. Cappellino said 31 individuals wrote to the district asking for appli- cations in response to the school's advertisement of the vacancy to be filled. Of those, 26 candidates re- turned completed tions, which the full board reviewed. At this point, Mrs. Cap- pellino said, \The board feels it has six very good candidates for superinten- dent. We're very excited about interviewing them. We feel we will be able to select a very good superin- tendent.\ The board is aiming for July 1 to make its final selection, \although that isn't written in stone,\ Mrs. Cappellino said. \We'd like to have a fi- na*: selection by July 1, to give the person selected time to make arrange- ments with their school or their district,\ she said. \Of course, we don't ex- pect to have that person here by July 1. He or she would probably have to give 30 or 60 days notice.\ Mrs. Cappellino said all six candidates being in- $2,000 From OTB Eagle Donations Keep 'Flying' In The fund raising cam- paign to help fix Gou- verneur's broken eagle reached its goal of $17,500 last month, but the com- munity that has given so &ithfully is still givinjg. After the interviews, Mrs Cappellino said she wasn't sure how the board would proceed, whether the board would narrow the field further, or make its final decision. \We haven't decided when to meet to discuss the candidates,\ she said, adding that the board had made no decisions beyond the two evenings of inter- views. She added that select- ing a new superintendent is a process to which the board wishes to give a lot ^of thought. \It's a commitment that will affect the school dis- trict for a number of years,\ she said. Michael Derrigo, high school principal, is serv- ing as interim school superintendent until a permanent superinten- dent is named. ^ -T-, * v v • , «r * Happy Father's Day FATHERHOOD IS THREE TIMES THE FUN when you have triplets! Reape Soils engineers from the state Corrections Depart- ment at Albany are ex- pected back in Gouverneur this week or next to con- duct test borings at the David Rastley property, Scotch Settlement Road, as a possible prison site. Acrew of engineers were in town earlier this month to conduct test digs at the site. Preliminary results from those digs have re- vealed no soil conditions that would eliminate the site for consideration, and a closer examination will be conducted. Soil samples collected during the test borings will be sent back to the lab in Albany for further scru- tiny. • t • • Soil Tests Due . Town Supervisor Donald A. Peck said all reports he has heard indi- cate the Rastley property looks very promising. \We've got a good site (for a prison) according to the soils crew,\ Mr. Peck said. \They haven't done the borings yet, but so far, it looks good.\ • . Mr. Peck added that in his conversation with As- semblyman John (yNeil's office, the assemblyman has indicated that it should be known by later this month how many ad- ditional prisons will be authorized this year. \We should know how much money they (the leg- islature) are going to allo- cate and how many pris- ons they will build, by the end of this month,\ Mr. Peck said. \We won't know where the prisons will be built by that time, but if they decide to build six, I feel we have a good chance for a site in St. Lawrence County—if not here (in Gouverneur)—then per- haps in Brasher Falls. \If they want to break ground on new prisons in August, we should be hearing soon where they plan to put them,\ he added. Gouverneur's name was placed on the list of pos- sible prison sites that was sent to the legislature for consideration when the in- formation packet compiled by local officials was re- ceived in Albany last month, according to Dep- uty Corrections Commis- sioner Kevin Travis.
