Family planning clinic set Dec. 22 In response to many requests by \non low income\ women for family planning information and service, the St. Lawrence County Program of Planned Parenthood of Northern New York, Inc. has recently opened a fee paying clinic in Canton. Any woman in need of a family planning program is eligible and will be charged according to her ability to pay. The next Canton Clinic will be held Dec. 22. Beginning in 1972 Canton Clinics will be held every Wednesday. As in all Planned Parenthood of Northern New York, Inc. clinics, a complete physical exam is provided to each woman as well as an educational program enabling her to choose her preferred contraceptive method. Within the clinic services, tests for cancer and pregnancy are provided. In the near future, V.D. tests will be available. If you wish an appointment or more information call St. Lawrence County Planned Parenthood of Northern New York, Inc. Center—386-2441, or the Planned Parenthood Clinic Supervising Nurse in your area. In Gouverneur the number to call is 287-0740. Robert E. Preston is new Scout Executive Robert E. Preston will assume the position of Scout Executive of the St. Lawrence Council, Boy Scouts of America on Dec. 16, it was learned today from Loren Edwards of Potsdam, the Council's President. His first appearance will be with the Council's Executive Board meeting on Dec. 16. He will replace Robert Shirkey who has been the Scout Executive of the Council since December 1961. Mr. Shirkey has left the profession of Scouting and is now employed by the Helicon Realty Management Corporation of New Orleans, Louisana, his current assignment being with the Or- chard Park Medical Center at Orchard Park near Buffalo, NY. Mr. Preston is married, is a graduate of Moravian College and the 251st National Training School for Scout Executives. He comes with a rich Scouting ex- perience as a boy, an adult volunteer Scouter and Professional Scout Leader. Prior to coming here, Mr. Preston has served as Field Director, District Scout Executive and a successful ex- perience in directing the summer Schools. He ia an active Rotarian, member of Harmony Lodge 8 F & AM; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite; Suzxex County Outdoor Show and is active in school affairs. It is most unusual that a brother and sister be named to these outstanding awards the same year. Even more unusual is the fact that their father was the State Brown Swiss boy in 1951. The youth were recognized at the State Brown Swiss Breeders meeting in Syracuse on Dec. 4. Nancy and Ralph were presented with plaques by Prof. Dennis Hartman - 4-H Dairy Specialist. They were also presented with certificates for having out- standing cattle in the Junior division in the 4-yr. old cow class and the Reserve aged cow class. Nancy's animal was also recognized in the all New York Brown Swiss awards division. Fred Cook, Gouverneur, was also presented with certificates in both the adult and Junior division for his two year old animal. Nancy started her 4-H work seven years ago with a calf she received from her father. Today We wish to ANNOUNCE... Y. she owns eight cows and six calves. She has shown her cattle at the county fairs and State Fair where they have won a large number of blue and champion ribbons. In her achievement report, Nancy states that she showed her first calf in 1963 and in 1970 and 1971, a daughter of this animal was named Grand Champion and best animal bred by exhibitor at the New York State Fair. One of her animals has a record of 17,206 lbs. of milk and 606 lbs. of butterfat in 305 days. Last year she was named as a master showman at the State Fair. Nancy has been active in dairy judging and the public presentation program. She has also excelled in foods, clothing, gardening, small fruits, furniture refinisbing and Jr. Leadership projects. She just recently returned from the National 4-H Congress held in Chicago. Nancy is a senior at Gouver- neur Central School and plans to further her education in the Home Economics field. Ralph began his 4-H work nine years ago with a calf also received from his father. Presently he owns ten cows and 14 calves. One of his cows has an outstanding record of milk production of 19,434 lbs. of milk and 838 lbs. of butterfat in 307 days. He has shown cattle at the County Fairs in St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Franklin, the Ham- mond Fair plus the New York State Fair. He has won a large cumber of blue and champion ribbons. His aged cow placed first in both 4-H and the open shows at State Fair. Ralph has also been selected as a Master Showman at the State Fair, and served as herdsman for the County herd. In addition to the dairy program Ralph has completed projects in foods, gardening, agr. engineering and Jr. Leadership and trapping. Ralph is a graduate of Gouverneur Central School and is a freshman at Canton Agricultural and Technical College. Begins in Italy Christmas belongs to the people. So thought St. Fran- cis of Assisi. His way of helping his Ital- ian parishioners grow closer to Christmas was to create the very first praesepe, or Christinas crib. His carol, \The Song of the Creatures,\ made the Nativity still more real to them since it told of the lowly animals which were part of their lives and livelihood. All this happened early in the 13th century From that time, the idea of the creche or crib has spread to virtually' every country an the globe. The club reports that they have one K OP (Keep Pounds off Sensibily) Catherine Stevens has lost 664 lbs. and has kept it off — one year and 10 months. Fowler Tops members at- tended a Fun night Dec. 2. Mrs. Stevens became a KOP while a member erf Fowler Tops. Pat Klock received the crown pin for being Queen for the Week at the Dec. 7 meeting of the Friendly TOPS of Gouverneur. Nineteen Brownies of Troop 273 attended the musical adaptation of the fairy tale, 'The Chinese Nightengale\ at Canton ATC on Dec. 10. Chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Eric Brodrick, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ritchie and Mr. and Mrs. John Snyder. Bread sale nets '630.01 A total of $630.01 was realized for the March of Dimes bread sale in the Gouverneur area. In Gouverneur the amount raised was $425.90; in Richville, $94.74; Hailesboro, $67, and in Spragueville, $38.37. Bette Compo and Phyllis Wells were co-chairmen for the sale. Truck driver was Paul Wells and Margaret Scozzafava and Jeanne Leeson had charge of the districts and the canisters. Betty Sadler and Shirley Mousaw had charge , of refreshments. Chairmen of the sale in the Richville area were Sue Woilman. Helen Stiles and Lois Langtry. Thelma Pernice, Gouverneur, assisted in preparing for the sale. In the Spragueville area chairman was Joan Snook. The W.M.C. of the Assembly of God Church will hold a Christmas party at Mrs. Belle Weaver's, Fine, on Thursday at 1 p.m. A birthday party in honor of Mrs. Ida MaroU was held Monday at Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Gates. Several people attended the lecture at the Calvary Assembly, Carthage, Sunday evening. Practice is at the church at 1 p.m. for the Christmas program. The Christmas program will be Sunday at 7 p.m. All are welcome. After the program refreshments will be served in the library, as well as a Christ- mas tree and exchange of presents. Fowler Board grants hourly wage increase The Fowler Town Board, at its regular meeting Dec. 7, approved the agreement with the county for winter maintenance ef 20-22 miles of road at the rate of $500 per mile. Also approved was the plowing of State Route 58 bet- ween the underpass in Fowler to the four corners in Hailesboro at the rate of $14.35 per hour for the grader and $13.25 per hour for the 1968 International truck. The Board approved the request of James Abrantes to have the Fowler Sanitary Land- fill open on Friday, Dec 24. and Friday. Dec 31 since holidays fall on the Saturdays, the normal time which the landfill is open.
