The male population of the United States, through the\ excess of male immigration and the higher male birth rate, is more than 1,000,QQO in ex- cess of the female. The &pan of life is on the average, longer tor a woman than for a man and the marriageable age for women is se^erajyears > ou-nger than the average for men. As a con- sequence of this the number of widows is very largelj in excess of the number of widowers, the figures being 2,700,000 and 1,200,000 respectively, says the San \Franciseo Argonaut. Theiejire mere divorced ^ omen who have not remairied than there are divorced men, and for all these leasons the number of the single men of mar- riageable, age is larger than the num- ber of single women In Xew York it is 240,000, in Pennsylvania 180,000, in Ohio 130,000, in Illinois 200,000, in Cali fornia 150,000, m Texas 150,000 and in Kansas 75,000. In Massachusetts the number of unmarried men exceeds the number of unmarried women hv oiily a.few thousand. In Utah there are35,- 000 unmarried men and 23,000 inimar- ried women of marriageable age. In Washington, the capital, the number of single men is 42,000 and of single women about the same.
