10A The Sentinel October 27, *^«* %V%V'**i Mark Webster Before you read any further, take a minute to see if you caii find last week's issue of The Sentinel What' Oh, that's O.K...ni wait! Got it? Compare last week's picture of me to this week's version. You don't have to be a detective to notice a rather marked difference between, the two Now I was going to devote the rest of the column to writing a bizzare fabrication on how my plastic surgeon had gone haywire, but I didn t think you d buy that. The truth of the matter is that due to cir^ cumstances beyond our control (I love a good cliche'...), my picture was lost and switched with that of the Crown Point superintendent of schools For tunately, he happens to be a good looking man, so it could have been worse. On a scale from one to ten, this past week checked in right around minus 2. The reason why is explained elsewhere in this paper. After reading that article, you'll understand that my feelings are obviously strong and lack journalistic detatchment, but colum- nists are people, too. I've only met one person since I moved her whom I did not like, and to that person I quote a line from a Jonathan Edwards song: \He can't even run his own life...HI be damned if he'll run mine.\ Uh oh...I don't have much space left, do I! Well, let's take the optimistic approach and call this a \cleaning up\week. Next Wednesday, be sure to look for the regularly scheduled humor. This week's episode has served two purposes. One, to vent a little frustration...and two; to hopefully let you know what I truly look like in my favorite white sweater. If they put a different picture in this week, I don't know what I'll do. Hmmm...Tve always wondered what it would be like to be superintendent of a school district.... * $. -nr \ 7 *V .as. *Vi»- Aletha Haley \Jack and I stayed here (Word of Life Inn) the weekend\ commented Marge Wyrtzen, when we saw her at the Village Swim Party held last week. Invita- tions were given to 100 people on a first come-first serve basis to swim Tuesday evening. We had an important conference that filled the 41 rooms in the Olympic Conference Center, and on Monday night the staff had a swim party\. Marged ad- ded with a laugh, \We slept in a honeymoon room\. This can't be Schroon Lake, is everyone's first reac- tion, when they see the magnificent building. In the swim area the walls of glass reach towards the sky with hanging baskets of tropical ferns to give a home- like touch to the huge pool area. \It was a great privilege and a source of joy to have the opportunity to decorate the building without any restrictions; except budget;\ said Lee Scurlock. Her husband, George, the contractor who built the building has set December 15 to open the huge 64-room motel now under construction, connects with the conference center. All the rooms in both buildings are booked almost solid in Jan. and Feb. In addition to the annual Snow Bowl bookings, other include Christian conferences. Last week 64 Baptists ministers held such a meeting. Ag Dillon and yours truly arrived with swim suits and George and Audrey Hackett greeted us at the pool entrance. This couple who moved here from New Jersey, first bought the red farm house that they sold to Don.Lough, the manager of the Word of Life Inn. Since then they bought the home on Whitney Ave. owned by the late Frances Lyons. It was wall-to-wall children in the \hot tub\ as well as 50 or more happy children in the swim pool, that made Ag Dillon and yours truly change our minds - we sat at a pool side table. Audrey joined us. She in- troduced us to Lee Scurlock, who did the entire decorating and buying of furniture for the Olympic Center. Helen Ross, who had taken us on a tour several weeks ago told us Mrs. Scurlock when living in Virginia Beach, had done the decorating of Navy ships while her husband built malls. We asked Lee what gave her the greatest satisfac- tion, finding the solid brass, 8 foot diameter chandelier, with 52 lights; the 600 yards of woven rug for the conference room, from England, or? Lee said placing the huge gazebo in the swimming pool area turned out as she had pictured—charming with its tables for the snack bar. Lee gave us a tour of the lovely bedrooms. The honeymoon rooms have canopy beds and whirlpool bath tubs. Afterwards we ate homemade ice cream and watch- ed the swimmers. Among the adults; Mike Marnell, Jimmy and Nancy Pitkin, Alice Slaterpryce, and Marion Tucker. Jack Wrytzen, who is out of town this week, has his favorite room. It is the Board of Directors room, with its conference table built by the same craftsmen who made the long table exactly like the White House table(except for its width). Dorothy Shames and Micky Barrie flew last week out of Kennedy to Japan to be gone for six weeks. They will also visit HongKoag and Peking. Dorothy will finish her trip in Oregon to spend Thanksgiving with her son Jimmy, his wife and their two children. Last week Rae and Ed moved from a hotel into Dorothy's apartment in her brownstone building. The Heims, on a buying trip, will stay until Sunday. Rae and Ed are opening another shop in the same Alpine Mall but in an entirely different business. It is named the International Sweet Tooth. Our granddaughter Judi's had her birthday last week. The family celebrated at the Hungry Trout, Wilmington. An elegant restaurant by the banks of the Ausable, at the foot of a mountain range. Our editor, Mary Jane, call- ed us \to write but keep it short\.
