From our Regular Corrt&mdmt,) New Yosx. December 2. Little progress has beem made in the Dock Department investigation during the week. The principal development of iterest has been the refusal of the Albany >bbyi8t to tell what he did with the 13,000 which the Oyster Dealer's Asso- i&tion gave him to secure the passage of bill through the State Legislature ap- propriating Pier 54 for their nee per- anently. It is, of course, supposed that <he money was used in bribing legislators in the f customary manner. Pending the result of an appeal to the courts as to whether he will be obliged to surrender the desired information, the witness, his name is O'Byrne, has retired to Jersey ity in the neighboring state. Taylor's hotel in Jersey City where O'Byrne is temporarily sojourning, has been used for this purpose more than once. Many a man desiring to escarp the urisdiction of New York state laws has stopped there while his lawyers have been fighting for him here. One of the most memorable cases of this character occurred seventeen or eighteen years age when'Jay Gould, Jim Fisk and Daniel Drew, on account of their connection •» some irregularities in the management o the Erie Railway, which brought them within the pale of the law, were forced to take up their abode at Taylor's for time. It Is related that Fisk would stam on the dock in Jersey City as the ferry boat came in and inquire the news from •York.\ Fisk, it will be remembered, was sho and killed a few years afterward in thi corrodor of the old Lafarge House, the Grand Central Hotel, by E. D. Stokes, Boatdfwteanafeiti refreshments for toori Meal*, luacbe. and ival of the Grand Duke at the Claren- a Hotel in this city, and while a recep- n was being accorded to him by the •exclusive*,\ Fisk rode up to the hotel, at head of his regiment, and with a band f 200 pieces began' to serenade the Rus- sian nobleman. Much to the chagrin of is entertainers, the Grand Duke there- upon invited Fisk in and during the re- tder of his stay in New York became iractically Fisk's guest. New England people will remember Fisk particularly on account of his con- ection with the Old Colony Line of Steamers to Newport. He secured con- trol of this line for a while and during LIB administration the boats were fitted ip in gorgeous style with two bands of iusic to each boat. It may also be said ;hat Fisk freed this line of the disreputa- >le characters that infested it for a time, as will be remembered by all old travel- is. So much for but a fragment of reminis- censes of old days in New York. ROBISON BCRNET. Perhaps no murder in this city has eve) achieved wider notority than this and yet a great deal of its inside history remain: unwritten. The assassination was cool and deliberate. With the money thus acquired, he went to the mining regions of the West and there met John W, Maekay, the bonanza mill- ionaire. Mackay took an interest in him and since then has backed him in numer- us enterprises. Stokes returned to New Tork some years ago and assumed the management of the Hoffman House. He still presides over this famous hostelry and moves in well-to-do circles, bis past being apparent- ly almost forgotten-if not forgiven. The career of Jim .Fisk, his victim, is an almost inexhaustible theme for news- paper reminisoenses. He was associated wiin Gould in many mammoth under- takings and knew the methods by which the little \Wizard\ made his millions. On this account, it has often been thought that no one received the news of Fisk's murder with as much pleasure as did Gould himself, for the knowledge which Fisk possessed would probably have en- abled him to blackmail Gould for the re- Fisk's career in Wall street was meteoric.
