IIEFS GREAT VALLEY Mrs. N e llie Ryan 'Our town was deeply saddened Monday to learn of the passing of Mrs. Nelli© Ryan, widow of the late merchant and grocer, Michael Ryan. Mrs. Ryan’s death occurred in the City Hospital in Salamanca follow ing an illness of about two weeks. She 'was bom in Killbuck and had lived, all of her life in this town. She was a member of the United Brethren church here and was al ways an active member as long as health permitted. Mrs. Ryan was a friend tO’ everyone and did many kind: deeds to friends and neighbors. Mrs. Ryan is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Courtney B. Norton of Great Valley and two grandsons, Ryan and Jame.s Norton of Great Valley; four nieces, Mrs. Harry Caldwell of Salam a n c a, Mi.'. Don Ilen n in g e r and Mi.'. Nellie Nobles of Randolph, and Mrs. George Rey nolds of Buffalo. The funeral which wa.s largely at tended was held from the home of her daughter, Mrs, Covirtney Nor ton, Thursday afternoon at 2 o’ clock. The Rev. Roland M. Wendell o f the Rirst 'Con^egational church .of Salamanca officiated. Interment was made in the family plot in Green cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. John Gilman were in- Clean W ednesday. J., and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Neely and children of Gowanda were week-end and Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Marble. The Rev. and Mrs. John Carlson are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Krause in Water- Albert Games and family have moved into Edward Clark’s tenant house. There was a fine attendance for the Mothers’ Day service Sunday evening with several present from Jamestown, Meadville, Randolph, East Randolph and South Valley. Mrs. H. V. Lindquist, wife of the pastor, wasi in charge of the service and following a short song service, read the words of a number of fam ous peqple about mothers; “Think ing of Mother” and “Old Mothers” ; the pastor presented a blue hydran gea plant to the oldest mother pres ent, Mrs. Augusta Oldro, 75 last January and a flowering plant to the largest family, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy W a ite and eigh t of their nine children, present. The candle light service followed; a large picture of 'Jesus in the Garden” on the rear pulpit wall was lighted by tall candles at the base; Rev. Mr. Lind quist sang “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” and Mrs. Lindquist read Matt. 26:36-44 and spoke to the theme, “Thy Will Be Done” ; solo, “Follow Me” by the pastor; closing medita tion, “Is God’s Will Being Done :n My L ife?” by the leader; song, “Have Thine Own Way Lord” ; clos ing prayer by Mrs. Lindquist. Biisti, Friday. ’ Francis Leach of Salamanca call- The United States Maritime Service is meeting the threatened shortage of skilled merchant seamen by training youths \who have had no previous seagoing esperience. Young American citizens in good physical condition 18 to 23 years of age are being enrolled for a seven months' course of instruction in the duties of the deck, en- ■ gineers, and stewards departments. Enrollees are paid $21.00 monthly; clothing, food, and quarters are furnished by the Government. The training course qualifies these young men for jobs on American merchant vessels where pay starts at $72.50 a month with food and quarters furnished. For detailed information write to U. S. The Young People’s class of the church held their monthly meeting at the horn© of Eva Godfrey. Six teen were present. Mrs. Bertha Carr attended the funeral of her aunt in Rochester recently. Her brother, Thomas King of Johnson-burg, came here and took her to Rochester.
