The prevention of 'orest fires is just now, md doubtless for some time will be, <4 more pressing importance than any or all measures for increasing the amount or im« proving the quality of oar wood-land. What most we do to keep fires from stnrtt ing, or if they do start to prevent them froui spreading far ? For one thing, we might make it a misdemeanor to set one efen tub intentionally, aud a felony if done knowing* ly. Then we should make those setting fires responsible for the damage done, and railroads will in time be compelled to use only those locomotives which consume theijr sparks. It is also suggested that is many oases the States might employ a spepial , police and detective force with perhaps as- sessment of part of the cost upon the ownen of timber land.
