MONDAJT. • But few teachers arrived in the morning and only one .of the Conductors was oi the ground during the! day, Dr. .French having missed the trajn. The 4eachers kept coming during th$ afternoon and, at the time of adjournment, the roll showed an attendance of more than sixty. At two o'clock p. M.j, Prof. Bouton in- troduced himself to thje teachers in a fen brief but well chosen| remarks, and an nounced the subject off the afternoon to b \TH B RELATION OF torn 9OHO<*& TO COMMUNITY.\ I The teachers were (requested to maki criticisms and comm(ents upon mattel placed on the blackboard at the time of Its first presentation, thenltocopy \wrbatim et literatim,\ to commas! and hyphens. The following points were developed and amplified with abundance of illustra- tions and concise and (cogent reasoning: I. The culture of! a community can generally be estimated from the interest \ takes in the education of its children. Unsightly school buildings or ground nd insufficient or unhjealthful accommoda- tions denote criminal; indifference to the proper claims of the children. It is easy to Interest children in the care of an attractive and yell appointed school and almost justifiable to permit them to complete the destruction of thf scarred and battered remnants of school house and furniture J bequeathed by a re- mote ancestry. II. If the community is interested ii the work, the only Question is, How can it best be accomplished ? III. If the commifn ity is not interested, the first question ia, How can tho COD munity be aroused ?! The speaker here !gave a bit of personi experience, in whichl he succeeded in fiijr- nishing his school &ous# with a series of valuable engravings and paintings, by starting out, pictures in hand, and asking individuals each to (buy one and donate it to the school. ! IV. To allow a^iy part of the rising generation to grow up in ignorance is n sin against the community, no less than against the individual children. 1. It'imposes needless burdens upon tin immunity at largje, in the increase o pauperism and crime. 2. It diminishes the strength of the peo- ple by depriving them of the Intolligcni p y pg t and enterprise of t h l t th i f ge who might be m p rn w great help to their ftellow-m 3. It weakens many who arc thenm>lvefl strong, but who are depressed by unfa- vorable circumstances of property family relations, f ' 7 V. It, therefore^ becomes the du; the state to compql the education fits •ml. We ' \are if she does read every •e never said anything against n jrilt e She v, if she igiit ha' •il a puff, anyway! Needn't say shecant afford • bloodhound atl L'O Co., knocked h i the thigh, to t get her by tli eked a lady, in r down and bit c bone. VI. 1 The right i of tho state to require the education of its children ill any direc- tion is limited onl|y by tho uncertainly of the usefulness of stick education. The right to demand a certaii religion is limited (only hy the uncertainly of its truth and uwfulnrsfl. VII. May 26.—It was our singular good for- tune td stroll up to your fascinating little Valley tho other evening under the es- pionage of Prof. Coates.\ Wo had heard oMhe histrionic ability of some of the young men resident, out had no Idea of the feaBt of fun destined for our enter- tainment. The three farces were certainly not such as regards poor /tctlng, for the parts were very well taken by the assist- ants, while such men as \Pat\ and \The Astor House\ were a feast of mirth in themselves. The gentlemen who took the parts of ladies were models of female grace and reflected credit upon their fair instructor. After the ph^g were over, there was dancing to a la|paBr rather early hour, assisted by the notes of a robin on a neighboring tree. During the evening supper was served, after which thcro was singing and instrumental music lo thn parlors. It would give us great pleasure to hear the talent of tills samo company again in a Comedy, assisted hy some of E town' talented ladles. —Tho way for a policy yonng man to avoid tho annoyance of lending his row boat Is to sell It to a \ton\ man, reserving the right to uso It whenever he please*. —Tho W. 0.
