Announcement has been made by tlie Conservation Commission that the game promoters have been instructed to enforce rigorously the provision that evidence of sex at all times re main attached to the deer carcass or part thereof when it is transported and that hides must at all times show evi dence of sex until the tanning is ac tually begun. In order to avoid any unintentional violation of this law the commission has issued a general warn ing to sportsmen that every deer or part of one transported must have evi dence of sex attached. Moving van owners of Albany agreed that rent payers of Albany prefer do ing their moving on May 1. It was ex pected a large number of families would move October 1, but van owners reported the »number of families \to move were comparatively the sam^^ as any day, with the possible exception of the first five days of May. Supreme Court Justice William W. Clark at Rochestor sentenced Elmer H. Hyatt to be executed in Sing Sing prison the weel^ of November 91 Hyatt, who was eighteen years old on the day of his sentence, was convicted of the murder of Patrolman William A. O'Brien of the city police force, whom he shot the night of May 2 after O’Brien had discovered him entering a house. Members of the police and fire de partments of Saratoga Springs have petitioned Williafn B. Milliman, com missioner of public safety, for an in crease of 20 per cent in salaries. The men say they are paid less than in oth er cities and the cost of living has in creased SO per cent, while the increase in salaries has been only a third of that. Heads of the departments re ceive $1,G00 a year, while the patrol men unci firemen are paid $1,200 a year. A memorial to William H, Cudden- back, associate judge of the Court of Appeals, was read by Judge Cuthbert W, Pound, associate judge, and adopt ed by the com*t. A spectacular fire destroyed the old Sea Beach Palace at Coney Island, which was brought from'Philadelphia, where it was known as Machinery Hall in tlie Centennial Exposition of 1876. Greene during July, August and September. Seven contracts for the improvement of 82.29 miles of roads were let for $105,954, Repair work contracts amounted to $4,440,134.29. Since he took office in April Commis sioner Greene has awarded 150 con tracts for construct.ng or completing 722 miles of new highways, at a cost of $15,852,456.43. For resurfacing ahd rebuiWing 416.04 miles of roads the state expended $2,234,662,43. Canned army food bought at recent municipal sales for 10 cents a can has been resold for 16 and IS cents a can by Mrs. Tillie Simon, who conducts an Elmira grocery store, according to M. H, Murphy, chairman of the mu nicipal army food sales committee. At torney General A, Mitchell Palmer has been asked to advise, what action should be taken against Mrs. Simon. Governor Smith has asked 12 New York financiers to serve on a commit tee to consider the advisability of leg islation to safeguard the public invest ing in new securities offered for sale. The committee will decide what is to tak^ the place of the capital issues committee, which was established dur ing the tear and was dissolved the first of this year. Benjamin Axleroad, an Albany at torney, has just been promoted from first lieutenant, judge advocate to cap tain, judge advocate. Captain Axle- road entered the military service less than a year ago as a private and has been gradually promoted to his pres ent rank. He is at present stationed with the claims board of the-war de partment in Washington. The Empire State Forest Products Association has planned to hold its an nual convention at Albany November 13, and the November 11 meeting will be made a preliminary conference of the manufacturers. The American Pulp and Paper Manufacturers’ Asso ciation will hold a convention in New York city the latter part of that week, and its members are being asked to start for New York sufficiently early so that they can stop in Syracuse and participate in tbe conference with Colonel Graves. In an automobile accident at Owego Charles W. Shattuck, proprietor of the Snyder Hotel in Waveriy, was killed and his wife, another woman and Richard Dooley injured. The ac cident is said to have been caused by the car skidding on wet roads when the brakes were applied. Dr. Royal C. Copeland, health com missioner, indicated that New York City must have to commandeer milk for sale to poor families in tenements at about 12 cents a quart. He said that a survey of more than 11,000 families showed that one child in every three is suffering from lack of milk.
