TO GOUNTERAGT BOLSHEVISM State Comptroller Travis Is Chair man of Drive—Says People Will Give Liberally When They Understand Great Need, E i g h t. hundred thousand children In New York state, which has the hest public school system in the country and by law compels attend ance, receive no religious instruction in Jewish, Catholic or Protestant Sunday schools. Sunday schools, as at present con stituted, “cannbt provide an adequate program of religious education for th e childhood and youth of North America,” in the optnioa of leading •educators ahd churchmen. Religious instruction for children in Mexico, Cuba, the Orient and other parts of the world field, due to war ■conditions, is- a t a low ebb and the ^ry is for more effective Ohristian work. In reconstruction days these condi tions p resent to the organized Sunday •school forces a challenge w h ich has been, a c c e p t e d .' To raise funds for a four-year program to meet these great needs, a financial campaign will be conducted throughout the state ffrom Oct. 6 to 13. The money will he apportioned ‘one-half to the county Sunday school organization and the balance to the state, international and world’s Sun day school associations. At home the funds will be utilized to give children more thorough religious instruction iby training their teachers in commu n ity schools created for this purpose. In the state, international and world iields, a successful campaign will make it possible to extend Sunday /school work to Influence aright the lives of children now without any re ligious influence upon their charac^ The Church’s Job. Because the future of the church, th e safety of democracy the world -over and the hope of a virile Chris tianity are wrapped up in the yout^ of the land, it is necessary to set that all children receive’ more an' better religious education. WhH their secular education has pr-'' gressed by leaps and bounds, thei religious instruction has not kep pace with modern needs. The public school is prohibited h: law from giving religious Instruo tion. The modern home “is failin'- down on the job,” according to Dr M. A. Honline of Dayton, educationa expert for the International Sunday School association. So, it is up t- the church. If the church is to per form the task aright, it must receive iielp that it now is not getting. 1 Is not the duty of the individua «hurch or within its limited ability to meet this responsibility, which if a city or town community probrem and must be met by the uniteC ichurches. This drive will, be known as the New York State Interdenominationa' •Sunday school campaign. State Comptroller Eugene M. Travis is the chairman. He has surrounded him self with a’group of leading busin''Sf men, who will help win success. This however, will not come without thous ands of individual gifts, large and small, Mr. Travis says. People Will Give. The campaign headquarters is Al bany, but the drive will he carried on through' sixteen divisions, each con sisting of ■ several ‘counties. Each cU- wision will have a central headquar ters, in charge of a divisional com- ^hittee which will be assisted by a campaign manager and an education a l director. The effort is interdenom inational, and i.s carried pn regard less of creed. It has the hearty en dorsement of many denominational leaders. The effort to raise the quota fixed for each division and county will be active. Wellknown speakers are com ing to New York to aia~in the drive. Mr. Travis himself will make a tour of the state. Another speakers’team will consist of W. 0. Pearce, director »f field promotion, and E. J. Hocken- bui’y, campaign manager. “N e w York state has the wealth and the vision to see this through,” says Mr. Travis. “If the people are shown that we have the mighty, im pelling cause that we know we have, they will respond in the greatest gen erosity. We will convince them and I know that they will answer the ap peal.” The campaign centers are Buffalo, Jamaica, O ssining, N e w b u r g h , Al bany, Troy, Amsterdam, Watertown, Utica. Syracuse, Binghamton, Elmira,. Auburn, Lockport, Batavia and James town.
