North Westcflester Times, New Casfle Tribune, Mount-Kisco, N.Y., Dec. 24. 1959 Building Inspector Refutes Reports of Code Violations BEDFORD HILLS— Reports that some home owners have violated the Bedford zoning code by cconverting one-family dwellings into multiple - family units without authorization were refuted today by Building Inspec tor George McCabe. \I know of some conversions that took place before the current zon ing laws were adopted,\ he stat ed, \but I have heard of no such violations under the present code.\ Violations Cited The matter of violations was brought up recently by De Forrest Hibbard, chairman of the Town of Bedford Zoning Board of Appeals during a public hearing at the Town House. Hibbard commented that some homes had been convert ed illegally but that it was the duty of the Police Department—not the Appeals Board—to uncover violations and prosecute offenders. Hibbard made his observations as the Appeals Board considered an application by August and Emily Kalberer for permission to convert a two-family house they own and occupy at 4 Bedford Rd., Katonah, into a three-family unit. Kalberer told the board only' a few alterations would be necessary since the house, formerly used as a church, has ample room and necessary facilities already are in stalled. Two persons spoke in opposition to the petition. Paul Noe said fire and health hazards would be created if three families occupied the house. Mrs. Thomas Jameson also spoke in opposition. She con tended that some home owners have violated the zoning code\ and inquired whether inspections are made to check on them. * Mrs. Joy H.' Chiess of Somers, who told the bgard she intends to purchase the Kalberer house if the petition is approved, joined the petitioner in urging that the re quest be granted. She said she was \shocked\ at the board's at titude in view of \existing viola tions.\ Decision was deferred until the next appeals board meeting on Jan. 21. The board approved a petition of Mobil Oil Co. for permission to install five gasoline storage tanks with a total capacity of 12,000 gal- ons at a filling station in Katonah Two letters from nearby' proper ty owners were heard relative to the matter but' in each instance the writers said they did not ob ject if the tanks were going to be put underground. A spokesman for the petitioner said they would be underwriters' demands. Louisiana grows more sweet po tatoes than any of the other states of the Union. •Jet 2 to Share In Big Estate KATONAH- Miss Julia Jay Dominick and Oliver Sheffield Dominick both of Bedford House, share in the $3, 900,000 estate of their grandmoth er, Mrs. Alice Hoyt Dominick of New York, according to a report filed by the State Transfer Tax Dept. Under provisions of a will, the Katonah legatees share the income with a son, Richard B. Dominick of Cedarhurst, L.I., from a trust fund comprised of about 45 per cent of the estate. Upon the death of the son, they wUl divide the trust principal. The rest of the estate goes to other relatives and charity. Mrs. Dominick died pn March 13, 1955 at the age of sixty-nine. URBAN PROJECT PROGRESS MOUNT VERNON. — The pro posed- midtown urban renewal project moved a step further last terday when the Common Council authorized the filing of an appli cation with the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency. The city is seeking $75,000 to carry out a survey and planning grant. If the city goes ahead with the proj ect, it would have to repay the grant. In addition, the city is ask ing the federal government to set aside $2,800,000 for redevelopment funds for the city's blighted sec tion. The city would have to put up another $750,000. Nocturnal Intruder Flees The Coop-with 15 Pigeons MOUNT KISCO A man who \pinched\ an arm ful of pigeons Thursday is being sought by Mount Kisco police. According to police, Dom Alle- gretti of Kisco Ave. received a call about 8 p.m. from foreman John Brugger of Kensico Tube Co. that some of Allegretti's pigeons were trying to enter the plant. Allegretti went outside his home to see if he had left the door of the pigeoa coop open. Entering the coop, he found a young man trying to catch his pigeons. Asked if he were trying to steal the birds, the man replied, \I no- take, I like.\ Then he charged at Allegretti, who backed away, enabling the other man to escape. When last seen, he was headed in the direc tion o f the Kensico Tube plant with an armful of pigeons. Allegretti reported that about 1 pigeons are missing. He said -the intruder was about 5-foot-9, of med ium build, dark hair, and was wearing a plaid jacket and dark trousers.
