Gardening Hints Some Kinds of Grass Don't Grow Well Here By FRED L. MARSHALL | Asst. County Agricultural Agent Grass grows and spreads from seed, underground rootstocks, and creeping stems. Some types may be propagated by more than one means. Kentucky and Merion Bluegrass and the Japanese type l.uvn grasses surh as Zoysia Z- 52 spread by both seed and un derground rootlets or rootstocks. Creeping Bents, the type used on golf course putting greens. Creep ing Red Fescue, a common ingre dient in grass seed mixtures for home lawns, and crabgrass spread .by seed and creeping runners above ground Chewing Fescue, some preferred varieties of which are Pennlawn and Illahee. most Colonial Bentgrasses, and Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) spread by seed alone. The reason grass doesn't die when mowed is because its men stem or growing point is located near the base or crown of the plant. If you ha\e ever examined a single grass plant (and grass is a plant—a lawn being composed of a great number of grass plants) you may have noticed this char acteristic type growth The leaves (generally 4 to 6 on the average) arise from near the base just above the roots. Therefore, the leaves or blades of the grass plant are cut while the meristem is not harmed. Now that we have covered the technical part let us consider the practical end. From past experi ences turf specialists are realizing more and more that Bentgrasses (Colonial and Creeping) are not suited for the average home lawn in Westchester. Many mixtures still carry a small percentage of Bentgrass but this is generally con sidered undesirable in our section. Therefore, we are left with the Bluegrasses and the Fescues. The Merion strain of Bluegrass has consistently held up better than either Kentucky Bluegrass or the Red Fescues. Merion. however, must have adequate fertilization (generally at least three times a yeari, be in the full sun, and have adequate moisture. Note: Too much water on Merion can be dis astrous. 88 TEACHERS ON TOUR MOUNT VERNON — Eighty- eight new Mount Vernon teachers were treated to dinner at the Ho tel Hartley, and were taken on a bus tour of the city as part of a two-day orientation program last Thursday. Now is the Best Time of Year ToTransplant,SetEvergreens Late August or early September is the best time to transplant or set in evergreens. If they are put in now, they'll have a good chance to grow and strengthen themselves during Fall's 'rainy season. Before planting, work out a land scape plan so that you know which varieties you'll warft for each spot on your grounds. North Westchester Times, New Castle Tribune, Mount Kisco, N.Y., Sept. 10, 1959 be sure to allow room for the new plants to grow. Other rules of the green thumb to use in selecting your ever greens are: Choose only a few kinds of plants—too many differ ent varieties give a spotty effect. See that the shrubs of youir choice biend in with your house as well as with your flowering plants — ,a tall corner-planting. sets off a tall house well, but use plant- that grow horizontally if you have a low, ranch-type home. When you plant, make sure that the ball of earth attached to the shrub roots is kept intact. To en sure this, handle with care, al ways picking up the plant from the bottom, never by the top or trunk. i About one-quarter of United States families with an income of more than $7,500 a year have more than one car. Free Estimates Fertilizer, Water Vital To Good Lawn If the average home owner were to get the same view of his lawn as a worm does, he would better understand some of the essentials of lawn care. To the worm, the lawn is like a forest of trees. It's easy to pic ture the battle for survival in the forest with trees sending roots into the ground for water and food and growing toward the sky for sunlight The strong live and the weak die. The lawn is the scene of the same type of competition, and so it is important that it has fertilizer and water it needs. The lusher the lawn, the more grass there is and the keener the competition for life. The grass stem has amazing re silience and is rarely killed by nor mal traffic. This is proved on golf course putting greens where the green is usually as attractive at the end of the day as when the first golfer in his spiked shoes teed off. The traffic that hurts, a lawn is ithat'Wnich:\ Wrenches and pulls Children running over the lawn do little damage but if they scuffle and slide on the grass, plants are pulled up, brown or bare spots in the lawn result. Sunlight is absorbed in the leaf area and is used to manufacture the life sustaining chlorophyl. A grass plant can cloose a third of its leaf area without harm but if too much is cut away even the roots will die. Cutting the lawn too close can kill grass. That's why careful mowing is essential Speaking of the worms getting worms eye views of the lawn, earth worms help aerate the soil and are welcome occupants of any grassy area.
