C, Italian drilling crews are tunneling through Europe's highest mountain to give motor­ ists an all-weather, high­ speed link between Paris and Rome. At a rate of 32 feet a day, crews expect to complete the seven-mile- long Mont Blanc tunnel in 1961. The tunnel will slash nearly 200 miles off exist­ ing Paris-Milan highway routes. The surface roads normally are open to traf­ fic about half a year. Four miles will be driven through from Entreves, Italy, and the other three from Chamonix, France. Before drilling crews link up, they will have re­ moved more than 35 mil­ lion cubic feet of Alpine rock. This first year- round trans-western Al­ pine route will cost more than $32 million to build.
