GENESEE, July 6.—'Many conipli- m ents have been- heard here for the successful way in which Mess.rs. Fisk and McGinnis of the Genesee House handled the large crowd at their hotel last Saturday, during the Fourth of July celebration. When Mr.. Fisk made application for the license a-nd was successful in showing the court that license was necessary in conducting the hotel on a paying basis, he promised the court that, if granted a license, he would Live up to the letter of the law in every respeyct. T h a t Mr. Fisk did this, even under trying cir cumstances last Saturday, is the geii- eral opinion of the public. As was to be expected hundireds and hundreds of people from the surrounding “dry” territory came to this village Saturday with one m ain purpose of getting all the “w e t” goods that they could, Mr. Fisk had previously made up a list of those people to whom no liquor would he sold under any circum stan ces, and stayed in the barroom with the two har-tenders to see just who bought liquor and that no one bought too much. Naturally, the bar-room ^Tlie\'final I jammed with thirsty ones at ■score was 4 to 14 in favor of G e n e - Cerent times, and when Mr. Pdsk ^QQ I thought that the patrons were getting Tile fantastic parade was very fun- • ^ tittle too anxious he locked up the ny and interesting, it w a s-arranged j closed the bar under the direction of Ed P a tterso n ,' to o:00 and from 5:00 to who is well known for 'his ability in again a t 10J:o0, th is line. GENESEE, July 6.— Despite the hard rain of last Friday and the prospect of showers on Saturday, ov e r 2000 people came to Genesee last Saturday to join in the celebration of the ever-glorions Fourth. The merry-go-rounds which were* ad vertised did not show up. The Hor- uell parties who had promised to come, 'Canceled their contract because of bad weather on pniday. The contests and horse races had to be canceled because of showers in the afternoon and the soggy con dition of the track. The- north end of the track was completely under w a ter, despite the active efforts of the F a ir Asoociation to drain 'the w a ter off for the races. However, one or two heats were pulled off un der trying ciircumstan.ees. The Ulysses Concert B.and, com posed of 40 pieces, was present and gave several concerts. GENESEE, July 6.— W hat came very near being a fatal, or a t least very serious accident, occurred last Sunday evening at about 9:30, when Rev. and Mrs. Rodwell and daughter, Ivy, exp'Qi ienced a “thriller” about a mile and a half from town, on the Ellishurg road. 'Mr. Rodwell had been to Oswayo to fill his. evening appointment in the M ethodist Episcopal church there and was returning home in his Ford touning cav. Near the residence of J. J. Clancy, he slowed down to make the c-urye around the little pitch which leads into w h at is known as the ‘rocks, ’ His automobile is equipped with e'Lec- tric lights, the electricity being gen erated by the motor in the car. When the car was slowed down the lights dimmed and in some way Mr. Rodwell orove so near the edge of the road that the ledge gave way ai d the car tipped sidewise over ‘.jjt steep embankment and turned com pletely over three times. On the sec ond somersault, Mrs. Rodwell was thrown out hut Mr. Rodwell an.d his daughter remained in the machine until it landed on its side at the bottom of the embankment, a dis tance of thirty feet. The mud guards were badly jam med, the wind shield was completely demolished, one or two braces in the top were broken, and the spokes in one wheel were damaged. As m irac ulous as it m a y seem none of the persons in the car were injured ser ious y although they were badly scialched and bruised, Mr. Rodwell secured help, the car tvas righted about and he drove it to Genesee on its own power.
