[Spi'‘cial Correspondence.] George W. Wk-kersliam, chairman of ilie coustitPtional convention commit- Le on the judiciary, has introduced hvo important proposed amendments :o the constitution. The first repeals all axomptions from Jury duty which have D-eeii granted by the legislature in ten rears i):ist and prohibits the legisla- ;ure from granting any exemptions -Torn jury duty except temporarily to state and federal employees. His other resolution permits the legislature to provide for a majority verdict by ju- ■des ill civil cases and provides that in ill criminal cases, except tho.se pun- ishable by death or life imprisonment, the jm y trial may be waived. “These resolutions are aimed at the aeart of the trouble in our jury sys tem,” declared Mr. Wickersham. “There aave been thirty-eight classes of ex- jmptious from jury duty by legisla- tiA'e action, and in looking over people exempted we find those best qualified to act as Jurors never are called upon to serve.” Taxation Hearing. The taxation committee announced that at 8 p. m., June 1 , it will give a liearing on the proposed constitutional amendment wiping out the exemptions from taxation now granted to charita ble and religious and other organiza tions in this state. Meier Steinbrink of Brooklyn, by re quest, introduced a proposed amend ment to consolidate the municipal and 20 unty courts in the boroughs of Great er New York. Constitutional offices of a conserva tion commission and a \water power and supply commission are provided for in a proposed amendment by George H. Bunce of Herkimer. Hon. E. E. F e rry of Almond, who for two years, has represented Allegaiiy County in th e State Legis lature, this week announces, in the Alfred Sun, his candidacy for Ten<^m ination, subject to th e Repubidcan. prim aries. This will be a surprise even, to his friends^ and well-wishers. He has undoubtedly taken this step upon his own initiative n ad without counselling his political friends for certainly no on© would advise him' to make this move which will surely mean humil iation in! the ond. In 1913 when the Republican party could find no available tim b e r for an Assembly candidate, .someone had ~a happy thought th a t Mr. Ferry, who a t that tim e was not very prominent m ight he persuaded to run, and that it wouldn’t m ake any difference to him or anybody else if h© were de- deated. But contrary to all ex pectations the overwhelming Republi can m ajority of this county carried Mr. Ferry over the goal. L a s t year, the Republican organiza tion! did hot w a n t to renominate him but had to or adm it th a t he had been a failure. Having renominated him and elected him, they feel that all their obligations have been paid, and they are now sifting out their i man from three or four available men who w a n t to be the candidate. Those of our readers who want to attest our ability to foretell events are requested to remember that in ou!r issue of May 6 , 1915, we said _ t h a t E. E. Ferry would not represent j Allegany County in the legislature > in 1916. Please jot this down and see ! how it tallies with the result of the psrimaries this fall. <• Organizations Invited feus 8 . The Bible says we must “eschew evil” , but I notice that some of you fel- lows leave the “es” off. ^ % The trouble with a great many church members of today is that they are all tangled up with worldliness. They’re hand-tied, foot-tied, tongue-tied, cut-and- dried, and it’s a case of woe-be-tide if they don’t get untied. j;*: It isn’t time yet to sing “Blest be The Tie that Binds” ,—that’ll come later in the meetings. It’s a case now of CURSED BE THE TIES THAT BIND, g and what you folks need to do is to cry out, “Oh Lord, loose me and let me go” . There’s more to the Christian life than a few drops of water. If some of you church members were put through the W RIN GER all your religion would be 'j:- gone. ^ |; ^ The early church was not satisfied with anything less than the supernatural, *:•: but now days most churches are quite satisfied with the SOUP. :*:• If all the fires in the church kitchen were burning in the hearts of the mem- j:!: hers, we would have Pentecost restored in no time. f:*: The devil loves nothing better than to fool God’s people into a compromise :j:- with the world, so he can get them to taste of his jdeasures which are filled with r-:- a deadly, hellish poison. ^ It is a hard thing to drag sinners into the kingdom of God over the carcas.ses of a lot of back-slidden church members.
