While thousands enjoyed the \Big Bear Show\ at the Gouverneur Fair, behind the scenes was anything bat good. I personally thought when I caught up with owner, trainer and \Dad Derrick Rosaire did not seem to be his outgoing self. We had really got a chance to meet and greet at the 2007 fair and this reporter figured that he was just tired and miles with the \Bear Kids\ could be catching up with him. Well, something was catching up with him alright, but it wasnot the miles or the \Kids.\ Ten days previous to the start of this fair, the Bears\ were in New Hampshire and like all youngsters, Chopper and Harley got into a scrap. Their scrap immediately got the attention of Derrick and he headed to the scene of a territorial dispute. Rounding a corner, he managed to run his leg into a trailer hitch on their pickup that just about knocked him out. \The pain was just bloody awful,\ stated Derrick (remember he is English) this past Monday when I finally caught up with him and his local hospital stay and the subsequent ongoing treatment. So instead of going \to see about it, he plugged on and the last day of the fair, Sunday, August 9 saw him still in town, owner on mend after injury forced to spend an extra two weeks in Gouverneur Since we have been \sidelined\ while Dad Derrick Rosaire heals up a little more from his injury, I, the grizzly named Indian, am going to take a moment to wave to all who have made our extended stay in Gouverneur, helpful, kind and most considerate! If everything remains the same in my world, see you at the fair next year. (Sandy Wyman photo) with a temperature of 101.6 and suffering from diabetes, his blood sugar was 427 (because of infection) when he checked into E. J. Noble. He is now recovering from surgery and gets out to spend part of the day with the \guys\ and \gal\ who sport the brown coats. When the Gouverneur Fair Association heard of his plight, they immediately offered a move to the grandstand side of the fairgrounds that offered more shade and electrical hookups for air conditioning to keep the \Fab Five\ nice, cool, calm and collected. They were resting quietly this week and Derrick is waiting for the okay to leave, they are booked in Waverly, New York on August 22 (Saturday). His wife Kay, holding the fort down at the bear sanctuary in Florida wishes she could come north but with only one other caretaker and more than a dozen of the furry counterparts to home, she is pretty busy. Since last year, Derrick had a friend who lost his wife and just could not manage his stock of wildlife so \Dad\ once again made room for not one but two Kodiaks. Now realize that a full grown Kodiak makes a Grizzly look like a midget. \Buck the Big One\ stands 11 feet tall and weighs 1,500 pounds. At the age of tender age of nine, he still has about three years growing time left! He manages to ingest around 40 to 50 pounds a food per day and loves to swim and play with his toys in the pool! \Marty the Girl,\ is only eight and weighs in at a mere 1,000 pounds and also is still growing. The family hopes to be home for the winter season by October and last February and March, the Discovery Channel made a documentary about the Rosaire family and it should air on the Animal Planet shortly. \I can't say enough about the kindness and consideration shown my family and the medical care that I received,\ said Derrick as he tried to put on his best Grizzly Adams face, \thanks to one and all, I. will never forget this part of the North Country, really great folks live here!\ Emergency workers positioned blocks and air bags under a van in Fowler on Sunday in an attempt to free a Tupper Lake motorcyclist, who ended up under the van after an accident. Surprisingly, the victim of the crash only suffered minor injuries. (Dick Sterling photo) Motorcyclist ends up under van after Sunday accident By Dick Sterling A Tupper Lake man is lucky to be alive after he ended up underneath a van on Sunday afternoon after the motorcycle he was operating struck a van in the town of Fowler. According to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, which investigated the 12:28 p.m. mishap, a minivan operated by Jacquelyn K. Reardon, Watertown, was traveling east on Route 58 when she signaled to turn right onto Route 812. At the last minute she decided to instead turn left onto Little York Road and, according to investigating deputies, failed to signal her intentions. A motorcycle operated by David C. Dukette, Tupper Lake, was following the van and struck the driver's side door, fell from the machine and slid under the van. The Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department, Gouverneur Rescue Squad and Richville Fire Department were all dispatched to the accident. Airbags and wooden blocks were utilized to lift the van far enough to remove Mr. Dukette from his precarious position. He was transported to, EJ. Noble Hospital,' Gouverneur, where he was treated for injuries to both arms, minor cuts to the head and lacerations to his leg. Mrs. Reardon and two passengers, Brian Davis, Watertown, and Leona Kelsey, Hailesboro, were not injured. Deputies ticked Mrs. Reardon for failure to signal. State police also assisted at the scene. When Harry met Keaton! Wildcats kickoff season in two weeks! It's hard to believe that the start of the high school football season is only two weeks away. Next Saturday the Wildcats and General Brown Lions will get together at LaFalce Field for their annual tune up scrimmage. The season opens on Saturday, September 5, when the Gats host the Potsdam Sandstoners for a 1:30 kickoff. Other teams scheduled to play ., .- Saturday afternoon games in Gouverneur this year are: Saranac (Sept. 19), Saranac Lake (Oct. 10) and Malone (Oct. 24). The annual Gouverneur-OFA battle is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, under the lights in Ogdensburg. After 11 seasons as an assistant, Sean Devlin will lead the Wildcat football program as head coach and offensive coordinator. Assistant Coach Justin Young is the defensive coordinator. Over 30 varsity players were on hand Monday, in 90-degree heat, to take part in the first practice of the season. Many feel that football means the start of fall... you would have had trouble convincing the boys of that on Monday! Due to ongoing renovations at the Gouverneur High School, the Edwards-Knox School District gladly opened the doors to its facilities and received notes of great appreciation for the services and comforts provided for a weeklong series of rehearsals and finally the grand finales. Keaton Backus, 8, of Star Lake was vacationing with his parents, Jimmy and Lynne Backus, in New York City, when Harry Smith, anchor for the CBS Morning Show, came out of the studio to greet visitors. Keaton decided Harry could use a couple of more ears. After those watching told Harry that he'd been punked by an eight-year-old, he insisted that he return the favor (see photo below), Nice to see that Harry has a sense of humor!
