A very large quantity of hay was left smoldering hours after firefighters first arrived on' the scene. The Gouverneur Fire department, along with ten other departments, spent over 13 hours at the scene of a large dairy barn fire that broke out late on Monday, August 10, at the Parent Farm, located at 1751 US Highway 11. St. Lawrence County Central dispatch received several calls by motorists driving by the Parent farm. Gouverneur's first alarm was sounded at 11:45 p.m. Upon arrival fire crews found the 100 ft. by 70 ft. barn fully involved with fire. Large diameter hoses along with aerial trucks from Gouverneur and Canton were used during the marathon to quell the blaze. A section of Route 11 between Gouverneur and Richville was closed for several hours to traffic. Gouverneur Fire Chief Steve Young said that the road was opened to traffic shortly before the busy morning commute was to begin after 6 a.m. on Tuesday. At least 80 firefighters were involved in fighting not only the 100-year-old barn fire but also to help put out the over 10,000 bails of hay recently stored in\ the bam. The dairy barn normally housed over 60 cattle. But luckily, the cattle were out to pasture at the time the fire started and no livestock was lost. Firefighters reported that one cow that was tied in the barn somehow was able to break free and bolted from the burning structure shortly after firefighters began to arrive. The Parents stated that the fire was at the top of the barn where hay was located. Investigators from the St .Lawrence County Bureau of Fire believe it's most likely the fire started from spontaneous combustion of recently cut and stored hay. The nearby home suffered damage to the vinyl siding. Firefighters were also able to protect two other buildings on the property. Ironically, firefighters were also tested as they arrived at the scene of the fire. Even in the heavy rain, flames could be seen for miles as the large barn at the David and Susan Parent farm, 1751 Route 11, was lost to flames late Monday night. No cattle were lost in the fire but over 10,000 bales of hay hade fighting, the blaze very difficult. The photos below show weary firefighters, still battling after over 12 hours of work. (Above photo from WKL- 24, photos below by Dick Sterling) by a torrential downpour. One firefighter said that it was ali he could do to get out of his vehicle because of the brief but intense rainstorm that blew through the Gouverneur area late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Another felt that the heavy rain may have helped keep the fire from spreading to the Parent home. The bam was insured. It was reported that one female firefighter suffered heat exhaustion during the blaze. In the true spirit of neighbors helping neighbors, firemen reported that many area dairy farmers showed up early Tuesday morning with cattle hauling trailers. The Parent cattle were taken to a Fowler area dairy farm for their morning milking. By mid-afternoon the large pile of hay and the little that remained of the large barn continued to spew smoke as passing traffic slowed down to take in the sight of the devastating blaze. The Gouverneur Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad. Fire Departments called in to either fight the fire, or that were placed on stand-by at neighboring fire stations included: Richville, Oxbow. DeKalb, Edwards, Hermon, Canton, ' Heuvelton, Morristown, Harrisville, Rensselaer Falls, Fine, Pyrites, Antwerp and Hammond. Rare pink daisy found on Trinity Ave. When I first saw this under someone's arm I thought it was a stuffed prize won at the Gouverneur Fair... And then it moved! Stephanie Sawyer has always wanted a pink dog... and Daisy Duke has always wanted an owner like Stephanie... Daisy may look odd to some, but she sure is pretty in pink! TUESDAY STORM CAUSES DOWNTOWN HEADACHES A brief, but intense thunderstorm passed through Gouverneur shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, caus- ing some minor damage, a downtown power in- terruption, and numerous trees and branches to end up on roadways and in yards. Gouverneur Vil- lage Police were notified of trees and wires down on South Street, near the Grove Street intersec- tion. National Grid and Village DPW crews were quick to clean up that mess. The street was tempo- rarily closed while the repairs were made. A large transformer blew on Clinton Street. Power was out for nearly two hours to parts of the downtown busi- ness district including McDonalds, Sugar Creek and Jrecks. The crew at Sugar Creek were checking people out the old fashioned way... with pencil and paper. Everything was back to normal by Wednes- day morning, (Dick Sterling photo)
