(Sandy Wyman photo) Santa pays a By Sandy Wyman The magical anticipation of Christmas morning for all youngsters holds special meaning however there is one among us who realizes that dad will not be here. For dad is off to Iraq once more so the Taylor family had to celebrate the holiday ahead oftime. With little time to prepare, the family was about to try and find a Santa suit and pretend for the evening of Friday, December 5 that the \Jolly Old Elf from the North Pole would just appear for Gavin's sake. Enter the wish of a small boy and even before Santa special visit was to make his appearance at the annual kickoff to the holiday season with the Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce's Christmas Parade, he heard in his heart the fervent prayer. So, lo and behold, Gavin had the chance to see Santa in his own house and to share his wishes and dreams with dad, mom and baby sister Cardin all the while with bright eyes and smiles of happiness so special. See, Santa really does know what is going on and for a little one's wish last Friday evening the Robert Taylor family was complete, By Sandy Wyman The Gouvernetir Community Chorus will be presenting its annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 14 at 3pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Gouverneur that is handicapped accessible. The concert is free and open to the public. The chorus, numbering around two-dozen is under the direction of Paul Buell and will feature Kathleen Buell on the organ with Faye Hopper playing the organ. A special note of appreciation is extended to several high school students who are also participants. The main feature of the ooncert will be the \Gloria\ from the Twelfth Mass by Mozart. There will be many other selections including arrangements of Carol of the Bells, Silent Night, Let All Mortal Flesh and Christmas Prayer for Peace. fiw^ssa There will be an appearance of a brass trio playing Christmas carols arranged by former Gouverneur resident Chuck Palmatier, son of the late Charles Palmatier. The North Country Swing Quartet will perform American Christmas standards with Pete Gaskin of Adams (guitar), George Marlett of Watertown (trumpet/trombone), Ted Markwick of Gouverneur (drums) and Paul Buell (bass). Faye and Kathleen will be performing a piano and organ duet based on several different carols and the program will also include sing-along music. The sounds of the season will be performed by the Gouverneur Community Chorus at its annual Christmas Concert set to take place on Sunday, December 14 at 3pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Gouverneur. (Sandy Wyman photo) Last year at the annual Christmas Parade, I had the fortune to meet Chief Warrant Officer Robert M. Taylor II enjoying the festivities with his wife Amanda and son Gavin after he returned from a deployment to Afghanistan. This past Monday, the family stopped by to introduce baby Cardin who was born on her mom's birthday of October 26. CWO Taylor is a Field Artillery Targeting Officer for the 10 th Mountain Division and this 14-year veteran will be redeployed to Camp Victory, Iraq on December 16. Godspeed! The second On December 6,2008 the annual Northern New York fifth and sixth grade Edwards- First Lego League competition Knox Lego Robotics team Championship Tournament The E-K team, named the competed at Clarkson had Senator Darryl Aubertine Climobots, has met weekly as a judge for the research since September. For the presentation part of tournament the team built and programmed a Lego robot to carry out tasks such as constructing and testing levees and insulating a house. Not only do the students program their entry, but they also have to do a presentation with power point and research about rainforests and how they effect our climate. After talking with the Climbots team members, you realize that they are sad the program is now finished for the year. It is great when children are having so much fun, while learning at the same time. The Edwards-Knox team competed against 17 other teams from the area. Congratulations are in order as the Climbots won the Judges' Award for their strong overall performance A Lego success! This group of Edwards-Knox fifth and sixth graders won an award while competing in a Lego Robotics competition at Clarkson University last weekend.
