Page 2 Gouverneur Tribune Press Thursday, Decmber 11,2008 Dates announced for 2009 Gouverneur Fair Continued from page 1 enjoyable, and much more local. \Changes certainly have to be made. I wasn't happy with last year's fair... nobody was. The biggest issue we had was with the midway company (Dreamland). So two hours after I was named president I had that company fired, and another hired. We certainly expect that our relationship with the new company will be a good one, and we've been promised that there will be more rides and games on the midway in 2009,\ said Mr. Peck. Coleman Brothers will provide the midway for the next fair, in fact, the Connecticut company has agreed to bring their equipment to Gouverneur for the next three years. \They've done a great job atLowville andBoonville, and we're confident that they'll be good for Gouverneur,\ said Mr. Peck. \They tell us that they'll bring 21 or 22 rides, and 1:0 or 12 games with them. Last year's outfit split their midway up to fulfill another commitment the same week as the Gouverneur Fair. \We've had four midway companies over the past few years. We're hoping that this starts a long relationship with Coleman. It's getting tougher and tougher to find a good company to put on the fair,\ said Mr. Peck. \You don't have a lot of control over the midway. Unfortunately, they bring what, they bring, and they do what they do,\ said Mr. Peek. \We can only react when it's all said and done. We have to look at other measures to improve our fair. We need to address the things we do have control over.\ One thing that will not change is the fact that free admission will be offered again in2009 It.will be the third year that there will'bemo admission charges to enter the grounds. The boawl has also decided to not concentrate on hiring a country music performer for the coining fair. \We simply don't have enough room,, or enough money to bring a big name to Gouverneur. In tlje past we've lost money when presenting a country act. The bottom line is, they're getting more expensive each year. It has become too big of a risk for us,\ said Mr. Peck. \We're looking at providing more motorized type shows, they always seem to be popular here. Saturday we will feature atrupk. and tractor pull. Local competitors will be asked to bjirig their own vehicles and show off their hauling power,Of course, we'll have more detailsilater, as well as the other acts that we line up,\ said Mr. Peck. This year's fair will open on Monday, A.ugust 3, but Coleman Brothers will not have all of their midway in place until Tuesday, August 4, at 4 p.m. Mr. Peck said that he, and the other fair directors, will be busy trying to get more local exhibitors to be a part of the local fair. \We're looking or craters, ear dealers, ATV and snowmobile dealers, anyone who is looking to show off their products. Unfortunately, that part of the fair has been lacking in recent years, we hope to fill up the midway with familiar faces and businesses weallJchow.\ ' Mr. Peck said that he is also looking for more input front the local community, and those who live in the county. \We're looking at having an associate director from both the Gouverneur Chamber and the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.\ Associate directors, who will not have a vote on the board, but will be able to provide input, will also be sought from a financial institution, as well as other areas. \We want all of the local ideas we can get. In fact, if anyone has an idea they can call me directly at 771-7690 or drop me an e-mail at peck donald@yahoo.com . We want to, once again, become a friendly, affordable .fair. Certainly after the disappointments from last year's fair, we owe it to the people who have been coming to our fair for generations, to presents show that they both enjoy and are proud of. That's what we're looking for beginning in 2009,\ said Mr. Peck. The Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair is one of the oldest traditions in St, Lawrence County. The fair is presented annually at the Gouverneur Fairgrounds, located off Barney Street and Rock Island Road. VFW remembers Pearl Harbor Day - Dec. 7,1941 Continued from page 1 \She referenced him being missing December 7,1941. \His boat went down in Pearl Harbor and he was reported lost December 17, \I was born< just three 1941.\ months before he died but my \She also noted that mom extended family, as well as my and dad were notified on the mother did not let me or any 21 st of December. The family of Pharmacist Mate Silas A. Wainwright gathered in remembrance of December 7,1941 when he and thousands of others perished in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Silas lost his life when the USS Arizona was dealt a fatal blow on that day. Pictured in the front are Julia Fahrig (niece) and Mary Kate Wainwright (great niece). Standing in back are VFW Post Commander Michael Webster (nephew), Richard (Dudley) Wainwright (nephew) and his wife Krista along with Vernon Wainwright (nephew) and his wife Julie. (Sandy Wyman photo) of my cousins ever forget who he was.\ \As with all veterans who paid the ultimate price, we must never forget them.\ \In 19671 was transferred to a Patrol Squadron based at Barber's Point Hawaii and on several occasions I visited the Arizona Memorial.\ \I photographed Silas's name inside the Arizona Memorial as well as on the Memorial Stone monuments at the Punchbowl Cemetery near Honolulu. It was eerie, I never met him but I felt like I knew him.\ \We the Wainwright family remember December 7, 1941 as a loss of a family member, as do many other families who lost loved ones there but it is bigger than that, these losses are a loss to our country.\ \Now we have new losses. If only nations could realize that peace is the attainable goal, their people, their most valuable resource, would not be lost senselessly.\ \Today however, an ideology of \hate\ is in place, a mind-set of a fundamentalist group that wants to destroy our way of life.\ \Freedom isn't free so we march on into harm's way and for the most part, take the lead. The battle will go on.\ \So now we must thank our men and women that now guard those gates of freedom.\ The wreck of the Arizona remains at Pearl Harbor, a memorial to the men -of her crew lost that December morning in 1941. .
