COME WORSHIP WITH US!! •**•-'*-£•-Lid- The first Roma Restaurant, started in 1933 by the late Joseph Pistolesi was located on East Main Street, the house stood on the left hand side (facing from Route 11) of what is now the Kinney Drugs parking lot. (Gouverneur Museum photo) By Sandy Wyman While browsing through the vast array of pictures and articles of days past at the Gouverneur Museum, a photo from 1933 immediately caught the eye. While most of us in this generation remember with fondness the Clearview Restaurant, now Mullin's, it was a learning experience to realize that another well-known name in this type of business was started by one and the same person. While Pistolesi Dry Cleaners was a staple for quality care of clothes for many a decade located on Church Street, the restaurant end of businessman, the late Joseph Pistolesi had a humble start on East Main Street. The Roma Restaurant as it was then called operated for a short time and then Mr. Pistolesi moved to West Main Street where in 1939 he began the establishment of Pistolesi's Restaurant. For several years during and after World War II, he owned and operated the business until it was sold to Sylvester Schiavi who operated it until December of 1947. In 1949, Mr. Pistolesi sold his interest in what was known once again as the Roma to Joseph Canali after he had been a partner with Michelangelo DeCastro in the business for little more than a year. Joseph Pistolesi, the son of Mario and Candita Alteri Pistolesi was bom inMorolo, Italy and came to America at the age of 17 in 1911. He married the former Clara DeCastro, daughter of Lallo and Elisa Ugulini DeCastro, also from Morolo, Italy on September 16,1916 in St. Anthony's Church, Watertown. She came with her parents to this country as a child. Mr. Pistolesi was employed at the Hotel Woodruff in Watertown until 1920 when the couple moved to Gouverneur and then found employment at the St. Lawrence Inn. He later established a dry cleaning business at 12 Church Street, the present site of the Gouverneur Savings and Loan before relocating the same business to 3 5 Church Street. In 1952, Mr. Pistolesi built the Clearview Restaurant on Route 11 and maintained a \mainstay\ in fine dining until he and his wife retired in the middle 1960's when son Mario took over the reins. Holiday support for Gouverneur Museum In keeping with a tradition that was started many years ago in the community, the Gouverneur Museum is again offering supporters and patrons the opportunity to have their names listed in a Christmas greeting message from the organization published in the Tribune Press. Each person who donates a monetary gift to the museum fund will have theft name included on the greeting cards. One will be published the week of December 11 and a second card will appear in the December 18 issue. Christmas donations to the museum should be sent to Joe Weekes, in care of the Weekes Agency, P.O. Box 426, Gouverneur, N.Y. 13642.
