St. James School is proud to announce (not in order) High Honor achievers: Mary Kate Wainwright, Emily Bush, Jake Sweeney and Honor Roll notables: Matthew Kopchinski, Lucas Currier and Grace Leader. (St. James School photo) Enjoying a special prize for the Thanksgiving holiday was Kyle Gaumes (center). He was the winner of the wooden turkey and food basket raffle at St. James School. Kyle did not hesitate to state that he would like to take the turkey home but wanted to donate the food basket to a family in greater need. Pictured with Kyle are Emery McQuade who drew the winning ticket and St. James School Principal Bridgette LaPierre. (St. James School photo) Continued from page 4 lot of time to waste. We agreed on Careers - an old board game from our teen years. Even my Dad played this year. Only my nephew John chose to sit it out and watch the football game. V/e had great fun going to college, making money from farming or uranium prospecting, collecting happiness and fame from Hollywood, politics or life on the sea. Some were even brave enough to go to the Moon. Fran won! It was about 3:15 p.m, Becky loaded Fran up with leftovers but I declined. I was staying overnight again in Gouverneur. 1 had no idea how long it was going to take me to get home. And that is how I ended up with no leftovers. Becky hoards the turkey carcass now and makes her own soup. I wouldn't have gotten that anyway. Fran and I had clear sailing until we hit Indian River Road just outside of Croghan. We were behind a plow and I hoped to stay there the whole way across. But halfway, the plow pulled over and turned around to go back the other way. From that point on, it was white- (Photo by Genine Gerhert) Laura Steele, Jason Spicer married on August 16, '08 Laura Steele, daughter of Christopher and Liz Steele and Jason Spicer, son of Larry and Joadie Spicer were married at their home on the Bylow Road in Richville on August 16,2008. Four- wheel drive trucks did pass me but I kept my speed safe and slow. When we turned onto Route 3, the road didn't look like it had been plowed all day. I think it was just that the snow was coming down too fast for plows to keep it cleared. My stress and tension were high because I had had an accident on Route 812 coming home from Watertown while I lived in Edwards. Totaled my new Oldsmobile! And the weather conditions were identical to what they had been that night. I was grateful that Fran was with me. It helped to have someone to talk to, and we tuned into North Country Public Radio to keep us company and keep up with the weather. We both breathed sighs of relief when the road cleared and all we had to contend with was lightly falling snow and wet roads on Route 58 for the final stretch to Edwards. I dropped her and her leftovers off and headed back to that luxurious bedroom at the Manor, and had another wonderful night's sleep. My trip home with Thunder on Friday morning included only about an hour of white-knuckle roads, going through the Tug Hill Plateau, of course. But as I got closer to home the snow had mostly melted, the sun was shining and the roads were clear. I am grateful for the good snow tires I purchased in Oneida last week. I am grateful for the safe travel - all four trips. I am grateful for the precious family time we shared on Thanksgiving Day and the bonding time Fran and I shared on those wintry roads. I am grateful for a good bed, good food and being able to buy the gas needed for this road trip. I am grateful for Thunder, my new to me cat. Even though I don't have any leftovers, it was a wonderful and unforgettable Thanksgiving. I was nourished and nurtured by it all - even the difficult driving. Now my greatest challenge is convincing Molly, my old cat, who is used to being an ONLY cat, that SHE is grateful for her new housemate. I'll keep you posted...
