Page 10 Gouverneur Tribune Press Thursday, December 4,2008 Tribune Sports scoreboard Wildcats open hoops season with win, Hammond girls trounce Lisbon By Dick Sterling If the first sign of winter is the start of the high school basketball and wrestling seasons,.. then winter must be here. Even though the Gouverneur and Clifton-Fine wrestling teams are still getting ready for the season to begin, area basketball teams are kicking off their seasons with non-league contest and pre-season tournaments. The Gouverneur Wildcat boys teamed opened the 2008- 09 campaign on a winning note when they got past Salmon River last Monday in a foul- filled contest at the local gym. The Gouverneur Ladycats opened with a weekend split at a tournament in Morristown. For the Hammond Lady Red Devils, who enter the season as two-time defending New York State Class D champions, and with a 101- game winning streak in the Northern Athletic Conference's West Division, it was another successful opener as they held Lisbon scoreless over the first half and rolled to a 30-point victory. As usual, the season opened with many tournament and non-league hoops games as players toned their skills for the long season ahead. Which teams will end up on top? Which players will prove to be key components in a league that is suddenly being noticed by the rest of the state. Many of those questions will be answered when February and March arrive. In addition to following the contests of the basketball teams in the Gouverneur area, we'll also do our best to keep up with the other winter sports teams in the area. As usual, coaches, especially those on the junior varsity level, should supply us with results, highlights and even photos. Of course, space can be limited, and articles involving varsity teams will have priority. To submit local sports news (our local teams include Gouverneur, Hammond, Edwards-Knox, Harrisviile, Clifton-Fine and Hermon- DeKalb) you can fax results to (315) 287-2397. The Wildcats, an MAC Central Division team, and the Shamrocks a East Division team, have developed a unique rivalry having met in the opening game in the Class B playoffs over the past couple of years. The Wildcats held a slim 14-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter^ but pulled away in the second quarter, thanks in part to accurate free throw shooting, some of the shots thanks to technical fouls called on the Salmon River coach and bench. The Cats tallied 25 points in the quarter to take a 39-26 lead at the break, and managed to hold the double-digit lead the rest of the way. Tyler Davis paced the Wildcats with 24 points. Alex Bush finished with 16 and Nick Cotton-Baez added 14, ten of those from the free throw line. Dan Gerow scored 16 to lead the Shamrocks. Salmon River scored 25 of their points from the charity stripe. TUE.NOV.25 GJRLSBASKETBALL Hammond 48 Lisbon 18 The defending state champs showed the Lady Knights what a great defense can do or a quality team. The Lady Red Devils held Lisbon without a single point in the entire first half as they raced to a 22-0 lead at the break.
