A crescent moon, Venus and Jupiter were all visible in one specific area at the same time. The rare appearance in the southwestern sky will not be visible again until November 18, 2052. FYI... the moon is about 252,000 miles away, Venus is 94 million miles away and Jupiter is a whopping 540 million miles from Earth. For those of you who missed it, and don't ready want to wait 44 years to see it again, here's what it looked like from my Route 11 back yard. Fred LaVack retires from Ag Board serving for 45 years Fred F. LaVack recently retired from Gouverneur Central School's Agricultural Advisory Board after 45 years of service. Fred was recognized for his service at a party organized by members of the Agriculture. Advisory Board • and held at the LaVack home- farm on County Route 9 near Spraugeville. Nancy Cappellino represented the Gouverneur Cental School District's Board of Education and presented Fred with a Certificate of Appreciation, signed by all board members in recognition of his service. Allyii Tubbs, Ag Advisory Board Presideiit, presented Mr. LaVack with a letter drafted by members of the advisory board, recognizing his many contributions over the years. Mr. LaVack first volunteered to serve on the advisory board in the mid 1960's, at a time when agriculture was much different than it is today. Over the years he attended meetings diligently, in support of the local agriculture program. He donated many calves to both 4-H and FFA members during his tenure. Those calves were highly sought after by the young people who often showed his cattle at the local fair and used them as foundation stock for their own herds. During his tenure on the board, the agriculture department was, at times, threatened for cutback or removal during tough budget times. He was always among those who stood firmly behind the continuation of the program and the agricultural education it provided to our young people. . The advisory board meets several times yearly and provides counsel to the agriculture teacher, acts as a liaison between the two boards, and supports local youth with an interest in agriculture. Each year the advisory board presents Youth Leadership Recognition awards that are presented to both 4-H and FFAmembers at Gouverneur's graduation ceremony. Gouverneur Agriculture Advisory Board members gathered t the home of Fred LaVack to honor him upon his retirement after serving the board for 45 years. Mr. LaVack his wife, June, and grandson Austin Rizza are seated at the right. Board members (from left) include: Don Peck, Lyle Hotis, Robert Andrews, Blanche Town, GHS agriculture teacher Joe Bullock, allyn Tubbs and Melody Hoffman. Austin, a Gouverneur native and graduate of Gouverneur High School, has been making a living as a professional drummer in Nashville for quite some time now. In September he was given the opportunity to impress his way into the band of an. up-and-coming, country performer who is no stranger to the millions of fans of the Fox Television mega-hit show American Idol. And... as has been the case in the past, Austin relied on his percussion abilities to do the talking. When the dust settled the other four who were granted auditions to become the drummer for Bo Bice were bragging about how close they had come... and Austin had himself a new gig! Austin's mom, Cindy Bowman, who is also his biggest fan, did what any mother would do when she heard the news that her son was performing with a country music headliner... she gathered up a lot of friends and followed the Bo Bice tour. While most everyone else in the crowd was concentrating on the star on the front of the stage, a large group of folks from Gouverneur were looking for their favorite musician, Austin \Curcuruto In tne\b'ack. Cindy was kind enough to jot down some of her observations as she followed her son... on tour! \Austin had an audition in September with four other drummers. He was told they would let him know one way or another the next day. But he received a call that same night... from Bo Bice himself, telling him he had the job.\ Continued on page 2 Odyssey of the Mind coaches needed at Gouverneur School If you have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, you are qualified! Coaching an Odyssey of the Mind team is much easier than coaching a baseball or soccer team, or even leading a scout or brownie pack! Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the United States, and from about 25 other countries, participate in the program. Gouverneur Central School District has had competing Odyssey of the Mind teams for many years, with teachers, parents, and even aunts and uncles acting as coaches. This year we find ourselves lacking coaches significantly. We have about ten elementary teams without coaches. Volunteers are being sought to coach. Coaching involves an hour a week through December, January and Febmary, until competition on March 6, 2009 in Ogdensburg. Training is provided, as well as ongoing support throughout the whole process. f J5A IS.JJSKJ^ .,&»*-\• \'•• «..5*K This colorful Odyssey ac- tor performed for the school board last spring.
