In other action taken at last week's meeting; * The board accepted the resignation of Parking Enforcement Officer Cynthia Collyns. * Gave Chief Whitton the okay to hire a school crossing guard to fulfill that portion of Mrs. Collyns' duties. * Rejected the approval of the contract with the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department on the advice of the village attorney. The board is waiting for financial disclosures from the fire department and will readdress the contract in the near future. * Approved a contract of $26,000 with the Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad. That amount was negotiated down from the squad's original 1 request for $31,000. * Approved the renewal of a bond anticipation note (BAN) in the amount of $ 120,000 for the electric plant. The annual meeting of the Gouverneur Village Board of Trustees is scheduled for Monday, December 1, at 7 p.m. New board member Jeff Spellicy will be sworn in at that time. GOUVERNEUR [741 Grizzly Rolls $f5.00 By Sandy Wyman For Gouverneur VFW Post Commander Michael Webster, a Saturday in late November- brings another challenge as he assumes the reins of District 4 Voice of Democracy Chairman for the New York State VFW. Judges for the District 4 level from the immediate area were Paul Roeser, and Sandy Wyman leaving' early the Saturday morning of November 22 for Boonville with Comriiander Webster. Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the VFW's premier scholarship program and each year over 100,000 high school students compete for more than $2.5 million in scholarships and incentives. This year's theme was \Service and Sacrifice by America's Veterans Benefit Today's Youth by...\ Along with the 14 completed entries for the VOD judging that had already been evaluated at individual VFW Posts in District 4, the Patriot Pen contest was also to be decided. This year's theme for the 6-8 grade students was \Why American Veterans should be Honored.\ The winner chosen in the respective contests Saturday will now advance to the VFW Department state level. Also a candidate from District 4 for the National Citizenship Education Teacher Award that was launched in 1999 was selected. Hosts for the day were the great membership of YFW Post#5538 in Boonville. Amenities such as coffee and doughnuts for a welcome along with an over the top chicken and biscuit luncheon with homemade pie for dessert made the day complete. Making a difference For the past several years, the cosmetology program at Southwest Technical Center (BOCES), Fowler, has been participating in Make a Difference Day in an effort to raise money for breast cancer. The junior and senior students hold a pampering spa day. Appointments are made through the students and by calling Southwest Tech. The students perform all aspects of the cosmetology field to include hair, skin, and nail care. This year, the students, successfully raised $657, bringing the total raised to over $3,000 since the spa day began. Members of The Village of Gouverneur Police Department are continuing an investigation into the theft of the two hunting rifles stolen out of vehicles owned by Beckwith Street residents during the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 18. Gregory D. Kirby, 64 Beckwith Street, reported to police at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday morning, November 18, the theft of his .257 caliber Weatherby Magnum rifle with a Redfield 3x9 Rangefinder Scope with sling and carrying case. The rifle reportedly was stolen from his vehicle parked overnight at his residence. The rifle and scope are valued in excess of $2,500. . Jerry F. Daniels, of 71 Beckwith Street, reported to police at 4 p.m., Tuesday, the theft of his .308 Remington rifle with scope. Mr. Daniels rifle was also believed to have been stolen from his vehicle which was parked overnight at his residence.. As a result of the 'investigation, one of the rifles has been recovered and two Gouverneur men have been charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th Degree, a class D felony, after members of the police department and undercover officers from the St. Lawrence County Drug Task force made a controlled buy of Mr. Kirby's Weatherby rifle and scope. Taken into custody at 6:12 p.m., Wednesday, November 19, as a result of the controlled buy was Daniel J. Roe, 19, of 52 Adelia Street, Gouverneur and Thomas •L.Aldrich, 17, of 56 West Wall Street, Gouverneur, on the felony possession charges. Both men were arraigned before Gouverneur Town Justice Stanley H. Young, Jr., and released upon arraignment under the supervision of probation after hearing recommendations of the St. Lawrence County District Attorneys office.
