Page 3 Gouverneur Tribune Press Thursday, November 20,2008 SLCHA holds 61 st annual meeting in Gouverneur By Sandy Wyman The St. Lawrence County Historical Association held its 61 s ' annual membership meeting in Gouverneur on Saturday, November 1 with a chicken and biscuit luncheon at St. James School with 35 members and guests present. The added feature for the afternoon was the opportunity to tour the Gouverneur Museum and Gouverneur Library with its now opened \loft.\ Library Manager Charlotte Garofalo and Museum Director Joe Laurenza were then in charge showing other St. Lawrence County residents what this area has to offer, not only in history but community involvement. Founded in 1947 and permanently chartered in 1955, the SLCHA continues to research, collect, preserve ' and interpret the history of St. Lawrence County. In 1965, the old Baptist Church in Richville donated space for storage as the association's artifact and document collection continued to grow. Letter to the Editor... Support agencies that educate about tobacco To the Editor, Tobacco is the only product that will kill one out of three people that use it, when used as the manufacturer recommends. That adds up to 25,000 people each year in New York State that die a tobacco related death. Those numbers do not include babies born prematurely because their mothers smoke, or the people who suffer daily from chronic conditions caused by or worsened by tobacco use. Education is the key, teaching youth about the dangers of tobacco before they are addicted to nicotine, . and teaching current tobacco users proven methods to successfully quit. Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, with support from the Tobacco Cessation Center of Northern New York, St. Lawrence Tobacco Free Partnership, Seaway Valley Prevention Council and the St. Lawrence Health Initiative, provides workshops and materials to area schools and members of our communities educating them about the effects of tobacco and how to quit. The agencies that make these good works possible are among agencies that are targeted for cuts this year and next year as Albany looks for ways to save money. Sadly, it will be the people who utilize these services and materials that will lose out. Perhaps you picked up a brochure at a health fair, or you have one of the \Smoke Free for Me\ calendars that were done with artwork by area children. Or maybe you or a friend have attended an area tobacco workshop, and received free nicotine replacement therapy to help you \kick the habit.\ Perhaps you spoke with me about quitting tobacco during a visit to Claxton- Hepburn Medical Center or \ the Maternal Care Center. All these services are funded either in part or in whole by New York State. Please contact your government representative and voice your support of these programs. Senator Darrel J. (Sandy Wyman photo) Unique quilt designed for Southwest Tech A quilt hanging, utilizing outdated National Technical Honor Society stoles from Southwest Technical Center, was recently commissioned by SWT Counselor Ami Larson. Ms. Larson found the talents of Ms. Debbie Shecton, an avid quilter, and resident of Russell, to create this one-of- a-kind piece of art and memorabilia for the school. Ms. Shecton was provided with purple and white fabrics, the colors of the National Technical Honor Society, and several satin stoles reading \National Vocational-Technical Honor Society.\ The word \vocational\ was dropped from the national chapter name a few years ago, rendering the stoles out of date for use in the annual student induction ceremony. Not wanting to throw the stoles out, Ms. Larson felt they could be recycled in a decorative way. After their initial meeting late in the summer, Debbie took creative liberties, designing, piecing and quilting the wall hanging in no time. Ms. Larson is very glad to hear that Debbie enjoyed being involved in the project. The finished product is a beautiful addition to the schools' new Media Center. The National Technical Honor Society chapter at Southwest Technical Center is named for Joseph D. Laurenza, former Counselor and Principal of SWT. Each June, a ceremony is held to induct new members. To qualify, SWT students must have an 87 average and no more than six absences at the end of the third marking period. To date, 412 students have become members.
