Page 2 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday July 24,20O8 Antwerp's Old Home Day celebrated Saturday, July 19 by Sandy Wyman While the music of the Original Yanks Drum and Bugle Corp with the Norwood Brass Ensemble performing at their award winning best on the lawri of the Crosby Library on Main Street in Antwerp for the - village's Old Home Day held on * Saturday, July 19, friends - young and old seated found J time to reminisce and then ••< enlighten visitors to the < historical aspect of the \ community. The town, named for '; Antwerp in Belgium was ; formed from the Township of \'. LeRaywith its present limits on !; April 5, 1810 to take effect on I January 1 of the next year with i, a part of Lewis County being '• annexed to Jefferson County by the same act. The first town meeting was to be held at the home of Francis McAllaster. Tn the spring of 1806, Silas Ward commenced the erection of a sawmill at the present village and was the first improvement at a point where the state road crossed the Indian River (Ojequack in Native American language). The Village of Antwerp was incorporated and confirmed by special election on July 30,1853 by a vote of 53' to 3 and in 1854 the limits of the corporation embraced 660 acres of land that housed three churches, Baptist, Catholic and Presbyterian, three hotels, six or seven stores, a great variety of mechanics and about 500 inhabitants. While one could go on and on about the history that included wealth from the mining of various minerals, the virgin timber that made fortunes for some, the famous Tves Seminary and the trains that brought home the soldiers and took the resources of a community to the far ends of the United States and beyond, it is time to return to the present. The lawn social sponsored by the C6ngregational Church satisfied the pangs of lunchtime hunger while the smell of the BBQ cooking at the American Legion site was for the making of a pleasant and delicious dinner hour. A wonderful array of Antwerp 'history was on display at the fire hall and the coveted 1923 pumper took center stage on the corner of Main Street at the same location. Many talked of the times gone by at the Antwerp High School, the passenger trains and the grand homes that still dot the landscape while the Soldier's Monument still draws visitors from far and near. Fort Drum's 10 ,h Mountain Division has become part of the community and the boom of artillery is taken in stride. the Original Yanks Drum and Bugle Corp performed to perfection percussion, as is their style at the Antwerp Old Home Day that was held on Saturday, July 19. Afamiliar sight that is always welcome at any event and this show was for the hometown crowd and most enjoyed. A unique sound and style that never goes out of style. One of the historical items on display at the Antwerp Old Home Day celebration that took place on Saturday, July 19 was this 1923 American France pumper that was the first motorized vehicle owned by the village. At the time of the purchase, the village also laid claim to a same year ladder truck that was scraped, literally, for the World War II scrap drive. According to Charles Miller, the truck remains in excellent running condition and was turned over to the fire department some years back and he most enjoys driving this vintage piece of memorabilia. (Sandy Wyman photo) Gouverneur Fire Department approved for $45,292 grant Congressman John M. McHugh announced late last week that he has secured an Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) for the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department. The federal grant award from the Department of Homeland Security under the AFG program totals $45,292. \I am a strong supporter of the AFG grant program because 1 know the value this additional funding brings to the local departments, enabling them to more effectively and safely respond to public safety threats. The members of the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department work every day to protect tbeir community, and I applaud and thank them for working to make Gouverneur a safer place to live,\ said Congressman McHugh. The Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department's - $45,292 grant will be used- for operations and safety Congressman McHugh worked in Congress to pass the legislation that created the grant program in 2G0O, and strongly supports all fire departments in the 23rd Congressional District of New York who apply for funding under the AFG program. The Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program is designed to strengthen the Nation's overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards. The purpose of the FY 2008 AFG is to award grants directly to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations.
