Hooper, 73, Snow Hill,N.C„ formerly of Rensselaer Falls, wH'1 be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Green Funeral Home, Hermon, with the Rev. Gregory B. Bailey, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Gouverneur, officiating. Burial will be in Hermon Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mrs. Hooper died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg. Born March 27,1935, in Pyrites, daughter of Albert and Dorothy (James) Dafoe, she attended school in Ogdensburg, She married Silas R. Hooper on October 25,1953, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Pyrites, with the Rev. Duncan Fraser officiating. Mrs. Hooper had worked in the former A. Barton Hepburn Hospital in Ogdensburg, been a waitress and worked in meat packing plants in Potsdam and North Carolina. She lived on Todd Road for many years before moving to No.rth Carolina in 1984. She was a member of the Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and enjoyed bingo. Surviving besides her husband are two sons and their wives, Silas and Barbara, North Carolina, and Ricky and Jane, Potsdam; seven daughters and four sons-in-law, Sally and Joe Aguilar and Trudy and Ralph Ashley, all of Snow Hill, Carol and Denny Yerden, Rensselaer Falls, Jill Denny, Richville, Tammy Hooper, Raleigh, N.C., Terry Hooper, and her fiance, Gary Barcomb, Rensselaer Falls, and Wendy and Manuel Garcia, Rocky Mount, N.C.; four sisters, Joyce Fountain, Pyrites, Molly Tressider, Russell, Mary Lee Woodrow, Gouverneur, and Mary Arm Mussen, Hermon, 20 grandchildren and 20 great- grandchildren. Four brothers, Sonny, Ronald, Donny and James Dafoe, and a sister, Alice Delorme, died before her. Donations may be made to United Network of Organ Sharing, P.O. Box 2484, Richmond, Va. 23218. Albertie D. Hill EDWARDS — The funeral for Albertie D. Hill, 87, Edwards, was Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Trench Funeral Home, Edwards. Burial was in North Russell Cemetery. Mr. Hill died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Canton United Helpers Nursing Home, under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. Born November 11, 1920, in Russell, son of the late Harold and Florence (Shaw) Hill, he attended school in Pyrites and was a member of the first class to attend Knox Memorial High School. He married Marjory H. Clark on December 11,1938, at the home of her parents. The couple lived in Russell until moving to Edwards in 1970. Mrs. Hill died April 26, 2001. Mr. Hill was fonnerly a farmer on Russell-Pyrites Road before working for Newton Falls Paper Mill. He retired in 1982 as stockroom clerk, but continued working as a self-employed gravel contractor and propane delivery businessman. He enjoyed hunting and watching deer. Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Marsha H. and Wheeler Maynard, Russell; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Edmund S. and Margaret, Leesburg, Fla., and William C, Edwards; a brother and his wife, Malcolm and Laura, Edwards; 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A son, Maxwell A., a sister, Marie Lee, three brothers, Clours, Ralph and Junior, and a granddaughter died before him. Donations may be made to the Activities Department, United Helpers Nursing Home, 40 West Main St., Canton, N.Y. 13617. Dorothy J. Hurlbut NORTH GOUVERNEUR -The funeral for Dorothy J. Hurlbut, 84, North Gouverneur, was Friday, July 11, 2008, at Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with the Rev. Wilfred Baez, pastor of North Gouverneur United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Mrs. Hurlbut died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam. Born June 25, 1924, in Rochester, daughter of Martin and Dorothy (Drexler) Goebel, she graduated from Monroe High School, Rochester, in 1942. She married Wallace K. Hurlbut on April 20,1946, at Emmanuel Reformed Church, Rochester. They were the fifth generation of Hurlbuts to live on the family farm in North Gouverneur. Mrs. Hurlbut worked at \Will Corp., Rochester, and later began employment with Gouverneur Central School in 1954, working in the cafeteria at West Side School. She eventually was promoted to district food service manager and director, retiring in 1986 after 31 years of service. Mrs. Hurlbut was a 66- year member of Richville Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 291 and had been secretary for the past 37 years. She was a 4-H leader for many years for the Rock Island 4-H Club and served as 4-H Camp advisory board member at the county level. She also was a member of the DePeyster and Macomb senior citizens groups and North Gouverneur United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and ceramics. Surviving besides her husband are a son and his wife, Allen and Kathryn, Inman, South Carolina.; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Stephen Walker, Holley; a sister, Norma McLernon, Rochester; six grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren and nieces and nephews. An infant son, Dale G, and a sister, Margaret Goebel, died before her. Richelle Dushano, granddaughter of Helen Goodale Witters and great granddaughter of Ernest and Edith Goodale, former residents of Rock Island Road, has had the pastorship of two churches near Rochester for two years. She has been appointed by the North Central Conference of the First United Methodist Church to the charge at Auburn. Danny and Lynn Simmons to honor two graduates in the family had a large double graduation party on a Saturday in July. Daughter Laci Simmons graduated from SUNY Canton in May with a degree in Early Childhood Education while son, Colby Simmons, is a graduate of Gouverneur High School in June. Laci is working at Fort Drum in Child Care. Michelle Douglas and sister Alicia have been to Oregon to attend services for their father, Kenny Deaton, originally from Rondale, Virginia. He had been a security guard for a local college in California. One brother came from Maine and another from New Jersey. There are six children in the family, Michelle being the youngest. Michelle and Alicia stayed nine days before returning to their homes. Taija Douglas, eldest daughter of Neal and Michelle Douglas has been working nine months at a Starbucks Coffee Shop in Sacramento, California. Two Gouverneur families made up of five grownups and four children spent the July 4 weekend in Ocean City, New Jersey. They took a trolley ride along the two and a half mile stretch of beach. Someone would arise at 6am and take the kids to the beach for a swim. Then back to start the day! Also went to well-known Rehoboth Beach in New Jersey, a United Methodist Church summer resort where someone had made large sand castles of Jesus and 'The Last Supper. Laurie Moses is visiting her mother, Joyce Moses and family. She holds a position in education in Austin, Texas. She along with brother Jim and his son enjoyed going to the Gouverneur Museum on Wednesday. A Patton Reunion of Pat Patton and Phyllis Patton Skeldon family was held at Westcott Beach on Lake Ontario a couple weeks ago. Thirty came from Baldwinsville, Richville, Edwards, Gouverneur and New Hampshire. They had a great cook-out. Filomena Murphy, celebrating her 90\' birthday on July 14, a former registered nurse with the local public health service was given a card shower from friends and acquaintances in place of a cancelled birthday party Saturday. and a dish to pass. Everyone is welcome. JULY 21 THRU AUGUST 1 Book Sale Hepburn Library of Edwards, 205 Main St, Edwards, NY will hold their annual book sale during library hours July 21 thru august 1. Hilliary Walters, daughter of David and Dede Walters of Gouverneur received a $250 scholarship from the Gouverneur Elks Club last week presented by member Wellington Swem Jr. She is a 2008 graduate of Gouverneur High School and will attend St. Lawrence University in the fall.
