He was very active in the Edwards Community and was Secretary of both the Edwards Lions Club and Edwards Fire Department. He was also founding co-chairman of the Edwards Festival in the early 1990's. Ogdensburg Free Academy Marching Band was worthy of his award this year. The Edwards Knox Marching Cougars are a young group with their second new director in two years trying to move up while competing with the more established bands. Under the direction of Jillian Ventura during the 2008 marching season their efforts don't go unnoticed, and their loyal fans will see them show a great deal of improvement during the year, and be ready for competition next season. Go Cougars The delicious chicken barbecue was enjoyed both days this year; hqwever the vendors were a bit disappointed and packed up early rather than brave the storm. The Edwards Lions Club is determined to host a bigger and better festival in 2009. They are inviting new members with new ideas that can volunteer- time to fill vacancies of long time members who have been forced to move over to the inactive- list due to health problems and of course the fact that some have been forced to leave the area in order to live closer to their jobs that in turn will help cut consumption of the \liquid gold\ that a couple of years ago was known as gasoline. Contact Ken or Donna Whit ford at 562-8377 to learn more about joining the club. \Black Caps\ on a summer day Wild blackberries abound this time of year and if you know where to look, a quart or two of these thumbnail size treats are yours for the taking. (Gidget Wainwright photo) Pee Wee Football program joins new league By Dick Sterling Officials who oversee the Gouverneur Pee Wee Football program have taken an important step to ensure that local players will be able to compete against area teams beginning this summer. Stan Young, who has long been a supporter of youth football, and has served in various capacities with the local Pee Wee program over the years, was pleased to be breaking away from an Ogdensbur.g-based program. \After being jerked around for two years by the Ogdensburg Pee Wee Football program, Gouverneur Pee Wee Football has joined the •Northern Youth Football Program, which consists of teams from Potsdam, Massena, Canton, Malone and Tri- Town,\ said Mr. Young early this week. \The program will still consist of a \Minor\ team program which is made up of third and fourth graders, and a \Major\ team program which is made up of fifth and sixth graders. No 7th graders will be eligible,\ said Mr. Young. \We hope that Gouverneur will be entering two minor and two major teams to play in the league, which would be consistent with previous years. The official beginning of the season will be the last weekend in August and the season will end sometime around the second week in October.\ Practice for the Gouverneur program will begin on Monday, August 18, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Riverview Park, Route 58 (Natural Dam Road). Signups for Gouverneur Pee Wee Football will be held during the week of July 21-24 at Riverview Recreation Park from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The registration fee is $35 for a single entry, and an extra. $10 for an additional family member entry. Registration can also be done during the Village of Gouverneur Recreation's \Football Week\ which is being held at the Riverview Recreation Field during the week of August .4 - 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The fee for the Football camp is $25 and is for ages 5 to 14. Anyone with questions or who might be interested in coaching please contact Stan Young at 287-1213.
