Tour on Thousand Islands-Seaway Wine Trail a \busload\ success ; by Sandy Wyman The newly created Thousand Island-Seaway Wine Trail meanders through , 78 miles of historic arid scenic • Jefferson County. If five years ago, anyone mentioning that .perhaps winerres . would ; become a North Country • tradition, one would have '. scoffed. ; Today that is not the case ; as four distinct wineries have • \planted\ their \grapes\ so to ; speak and have made believers \ out of even the most skeptical. ; Owing to the fact that \ publicity will take these I flourishing businesses to new ' heights, the Gouverneur ! Retired Teachers Association \ decided to undertake a \wine ; tour,\ public invited. • The date was set for ' Thursday, June 26 and shortly ; after 9am, the chartered bus from S-and-W Tours of Brier Hill pulled into the municipal parking lot. First up was a stop at the Thousand Islands Winery that is situated on a farm that has been in existence since 1836 with the original name of the Massey farm. Now owners Steve and Erika. Conaway purchased the farm in 2002 and after retiring from the Army on 2003, Steve committed himself to fashioning a winery. Much in the way of research has gone into every one of these ventures spread out through Jefferson County. Can our area be far behind? One of the sights that first greet visitors is rows of grape vines being established. First thought to be impossible north of the Finger Lakes region, cold-hardy grapes are now taking hold in North Country soil. Everything you ever wanted to know about the making of wine was made into a pleasant journey through the process until the finished product was labeled and headed off to consumers. Soon the group was on the way to the YellowBarn Winery that is located just outside of Sackets Harbor. Owned and operated by the Surdo -family, the winery is well on its way to becoming self-sufficient with the expansion of other fanners nearby planting acres of grapes. Grape vines take four years of growth before producing fruit and the amount of work involved is just short of amazing. Did I mention that we had a great lunch and break with Lake Ontario scenery at Sackets Harbor? With the afternoon waning, the last stop on the tour was the Otter Creek Wineiy located just outside of Philadelphia. Opened in 2007, its is the newest addition to the North Country wine business and owner Kyle Hafemann is New York State's youngest winery owner. According to tour information, the farm on which the winery is locate now has four acres of grapes to be on the vines in another two years and the business has also purchased a \grape harvester\ that draws a lot of attention from visitors. Will the next brand of award-winning wine have the name of Gouverneur attached? If they can grow grapes in Minnesota, we can do the same here and perhaps a better business opportunity will present itself for our area. mmxz Winding down from a day long trip of touring Northern New York wineries, little did the busload of interested people realize that the Otter Creek Winery would feature this unique \grape harvester\ to compliment the end of the tour on Thursday, June 26 sponsored by the Gouverneur Retired Teachers Association. (Sandy Wyman photo) With three wineries on the schedule and a full bus jpad, divided groups of interested local residents enjoyed a hands-on wine tour on Thursday, June 26 sponsored by the Gouverneur Retired Teachers Association. This informative journey into the fine art of making a North Country wine started out at the Thousand Islands Winery.
