Noble Hospital late last Friday night, sent several emergency crews, including the St. Lawrence County Hazmat team, to the physician's office wing of the West Barney Street hospital. Automatic alarms alerted emergency officials to the problem shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday. Gouverneur police and firefighters quickly responded to the scene and discovered a heavy mist and chemical smoke, caused by escaping freon, in the wing near the office of Dr. Edward Reason. For a time the hospital's emergency room and adjacent Kinney Nursing Home, were on alert .to evacuate, but firefighters were able to seal off ductwork in the physician's wing, which was then ventilated for several hours. Hazmat officials detected high concentrations of hydrocarbons in the wing, and a lesser amount in the emergency room. One patient was diverted to Claxton- Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg. Ambulances from Gouverneur, Canton, Hermon and Rensselaer Falls were called to the scene. Hydrocarbon levels returned to normal levels by early Saturday morning after the area of the leak had been thoroughly ventilated.
