If I may, I would like to draw your attention to the empty chair on -thestage. The chair-iis foe-Gary— Hughes.\ \Gary was a member of the Class of 2008 who was taken from us this past fall. He was a friendly, humorous young man, a loving son, brother, a friend and classmate.\ \We have mourned Gary's passing,, however he and his family are not forgotten in our thoughts and prayers.\ Our 2008 class officers will now present Gary's parents with a small gift from his classmates.\ Please join me in a moment of silence. Thank you.\ Then it became very apparent why all the seniors were carrying long stemmed pink and red single carnations that had been deposited in large baskets before they took the seats. While the officers made their way to the Hughes family setting in the front center row, there was hardly a dry eye in the house. \Commencement (to commence, to start), stated Mr. Dixon in opening remarks. \For our graduates this evening their formal public education ends and their adult lives begin.\ \If you look at our lives as chapters in a book, after tonight you can turn to a fresh page.\ \The early chapters dealt with being born, starting kindergarten, going to middle school and entering high school.\ \The real drama began for most of you back in middle school as your differences began to emerge.\ \This growing up thing is a constant battle of the inner Peter Pan versus Turning into your Parents. Freedom versus responsibility.\ \Some of you have run here tonight, some have come kicking and screaming, but it is too late, there is no turning- back.\ \Most of you have worked to set a direction for yourself. Tonight is an exciting time as you are rewarded for your efforts to this point in your education and life.\ \Tomorrow you begin, writing the next chapter of your life's story. From this school and this community will burst forth the Class of 2008.\ \Each of you traveling into the world to make your own mark, unique to yourself. LaRose remarked on facts that she knew to be true including references to Abraham Lincoln and the political dynasty of the Kennedy family to delve into this year's graduates' ability to adueve the impossible. Chosen by the Honors Group for the Class of 2008, three speakers addressed the packed house on graduation night, a ceremony 13 years in the making. Danielle Easton \Thirteen years ago on the first day of kindergarten, I got lost. I walked into the East Side School lobby and did not know in which of the three hallways my classroom was located.\ \Six years ago, on the first day of middle school, I got lost! I went to the third floor instead of the second floor. Here we are on the brink of the real world and undoubtedly we will get lost.\ \In fact we have been getting lost all our lives. We have been constantly losing things and will continue to whether we want to or nor. Although we have lost, we have lost it together.\ \There were those sports games we lost. In 7 th grade our modified girls' basketball team lost every single game. Even recently we senior girls lost tug-of-war to the junior girls.\ \When we arrived in New York City on the senior class trip, Chris realized he has lost all his clothes. Karah is constantly losing her cell phone. There was that time Emma and Julia got \lost\ in the Bronx.\ \Emily has been always losing her make-up. In 10 th grade, Matt even nicknamed me 'loser'.\ Tim lost his bet to Tyler when die Patriots lost the Superbowl to the Giants.\ \Aubrey must have gotten lost on the way to school every morning. It seemed like somebody new was always losing their senior privileges too. We have all been losing most of our money to that slice at New York Pizzeria and to those open roads that we needed to travel.\ \We have always been losing, together. In November we all lost a friend. It is times like that when we would be lost without each other.\ • \Some of our strongest bonds have been made throughout our school years. Some bonds will truly stand the test of time and prove that they are not going to get lost to the hands of mister grandfather clock.\ \If it were not for the many people helping us along the way, I think we all may have lost our minds. To those teachers that were always losing our assignments, thank you for helping us find our true potential and not just marking us as another lost cause.\ \To our parents who were always losing our one game sock, our important forms for school, our work schedules and our car keys, thank you for finding us when we had lost our way home.\ \If it was not for you, always searching for that last comma in an essay and always giving us directions to keep us from getting lost, we would be lost in a jumble.\ \Instead here we are almost at a loss for words for all we have accomplished.\ \There are some things I hope we never lose, like our memories with each other and all the good high school times.\ \1 hope we never lose our sense of hard work, or the value of a hard earned dollar. After all, most of us have been working those minimum wage Continued on page 2 By Dick Sterling The heat of the ongoing disagreements between members of the Gouverneur Village Board of Trustees and members of the Village Planning Board came to a boiling point over the past two weeks resulting in at least four members of the five-member Planning Board to tender their resignations. During a special meeting of the Board of Trustees late last week the _H^signati.orjs were accepted, and four new members 'were appointed to the board. Mayor Dorothy Vorce and her board were made aware publicly of a decision the Planning Board made during their most recent meeting during the June 17, regular meeting of the board. Donna Lawrence, who operates Lawrence Manor, East Main Street with her husband Nelson, and is also Executive Director of the Greater Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce, informed the board that the Planning Board had rejected a sign request from Fashion Kraze, a new clothing store, located on Main Street in the downtown business district, because of issues with the wording on the proposed sign. \I'm not here representing the Chamber. I'm here speaking on behalf of the people who own Fashion Kraze, who have been customers of ours since they started looking into opening a store in Gouverneur,\ said Mrs. Lawrence, who has had disputes involving codes, signs and the Planning Board in the past. At issue is a sign for the new business. Planning Board Chairman William Scozzafava, during the board's most recent meeting, proposed the sign to the other members of the Planning Board. \I don't see a major problem with it. The sign meets the size requirements, it can't exceed 150 square feet, and it doesn't,\ said Mr. Scozzafava. Planning Board member Anne N. Audet is the only member of the board to initially resist the new sign. \Signs downtown are expected to fit into the historic integrity of the district. This doesn't look to me • like it fits in,\ said Ms. Audet. \It just doesn't fit with the historic buildings downtown.\ The board acknowledged that similar signs had been approved for both the Canton and Tupper Lake Fashion Kraze stores. \But those stores are in plazas, it's not the same thing,\ insisted Ms. Audet. Mr. Scozzafava asked if the wording on the sign was what was offensive. \Is it famous brands and discount prices that bother you?\ he asked Ms. Audet. \Our code indicates that stores can't advertise brand names. I guess we could ask them to change it, and bring it back.\ \One of our jobs here is to maintain the integrity of downtown,\ said Ms. Audet. We're sup[posed to be a voice for historic preservation. That sign just doesn't go with that district,\ said Ms. Audet. After about 10 minutes of discussion, Mr. Scozzafava made a motion to reject the sign and ask for another, \more in compliance.\ Mr. Scozzafava addressed a local representative for Fashion Kraze. \I guess we're just asking you to get rid of famous brands and discount prices. That's not a horrible punishment is it?\ Continued on page 2 V • jugular '1 ^atl*! ioper* Now that's a good dealt Drivers near Jim's Auto in Edwards did a double take for a few brief moments last week when a 1 took the place of a 4.
