Page 6 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday June 19,2008 : Edwards area news Brush pick-up days scheduled I By Nancy Given-McConnell * Mayor Jan Lennox advised «• village residents have been ; busy trimming, trees and shrubs ; as well as clearing up branches » due to the recent wind storm, * and have requested another * brush pick up date. ; Highway Superintendent « Duane Sykes set the dates of I June 23 and 24 from 6 a.m. to 4 * p.m. for village-wide pickup. LIGHT CONSIDERED Considering another recent serious accident on Route 58 and River Road, Mayor Lennox advised residents are expressing concern to encourage the village to join the town in a joint effort to encourage the State of New York or St. Lawrence County for a caution or stop light at the location. The next regularly scheduled monthly Village Board meeting is July 21, at 7 p.m. . E-KGRADUATIONJUNE28 1 \ ; Yes it's that time again. School is winding down and graduation is upon us as another class goes out to make their mark in the world. The Class of 2008 will be turning their tassels and tossing their caps June 28, at 7 p.m., followed by an all night drug and alcohol free after grad party at school. Graduation brings to mind an announcement in today's paper of Todd Wells, an EKCS grad who this year earned his degree in Pharmacy. Congratulations Todd. We may be honored by his service with Kinney Drugs where he has formerly trained during his time in pharmacy school. SICKLIST Several are on the sick list or recuperating from recent bouts of something or other. We hear Deb Roberts is makingprogress from a serious stroke and hope she will be back terrorizing the village soon, Of course Sandy and I .wonder how the Tribune ever got a paper out without us while we recuperated under the watchful eyes of the medical staffs at E.J Noble and Canton- Potsdam Hospitals. My recent missing in action resulted in missing the annual Dairy Princess Festival parade, Russell's spectacular Memorial Day celebration, Flag Day in Gouverneur and our co- worker Bobbi Jo's wedding last weekend. Congratulations Bobbi and Joe. That little set back also resulted in a clean sweep of my collection of 13 finches, parrot and cockatiels. Coming to the rescue was my sweet six-year- old granddaughter Kennedy who agreed to adopt the entire flock. LIBRARYMODERIZATION The Edwards Hepburn Library has taken a complete turn from the 1950's when the primary function was loaning books out, and never uttering an audible sound. With the modern age of electronic technology came a copy machine, fax service, document lamination, story hour for the youngsters, notaiy service and, of course, high- speed Internet accessible computer service. With changing times the staff felt it was time for a survey to determine among other things if their present hours needed to be adjusted to better meet patron's need especially during the summer months when friends from the lake enjoy the convenience of relaxing with a good book in the evening. Librarian Elaine is always happy to accommodate customers by borrowing their favorite books from other locations each week in the event she does not have it on the shelf at the time. Results of the survey indicated a change of hours during the summer months would be one of the conveniences requested. Following is the new summer hours, Which will still include service five days a week. Effective July 1, 2008 hours will be; Monday and Tuesday; noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Thursday; noon to 4 p.m. and Friday; 9 a.m. to noon. In other Library news; take note of the new roof currently in progress. BOATERSAFETY COURSE A Boater Safety Course will be offered from 9 a.m. 'til finish at the Hepburn Library on July 26. Call Mr. Archer at 562-3483 for sign up and additional information. The course is customarily offered annually just prior to the Trout Lake Rod and Gun Club kid's fishing derby which is the first weekend of August.' WELCOME SUMMERFRIENDS Even though gas is at a premium this year our friends who move in to their camps from downstate as well as out of the state are not letting it interfere with their traditional yearly vacation. It is always a pleasure to see the same families join the area for a few weeks each summer to share their families lives from the past fall and winter. NEWFLAG A special ceremony will be held today, June 19, at the Senior Nutrition Site to accept a United States Flag that has been flown over the Capitol in Washington, and will now hold a place of honor in Edwards. The public is invited to attend directly after lunch. BACKONMYBEAT Hopefully next weeks edition will include the usual news that several have been missing during my sick leave.
