(Dick Ster- ling photo) They could use your support Benefits this weekend for two local families By Dick Sterling The flags of every state government building in New York were flying at half-staff on Monday in honor of an Antwerp man, the latest victim of the war in Iraq. Staff Sgt. Tyler E. Pickett, 28, who has called Antwerp home for the past few years, was killed on June 8, by an improvised explosive device, a suicide bomber, in Kirkuk province, Iraq. On Monday a procession of military vehicles, police and emergency vehicles and many motorcycles, guided a Green Funeral Home hearse from Fort Drum, north on Route 11 through Philadelphia, and into Antwerp. The procession slowly passed a large crowd of Antwerp area residents who lined the streets of the tiny village, standing shoulder-to- shoulder in many areas, they had come out to say farewell to .one of their own. Many knew Tyler, others did not. But all were there early on a beautifully sunny Monday afternoon to honor the man who had given his life while fighting for freedom. Young, old, men and women, veterans and schoolchildren were all standing amidst a sea of American flags as the vehicle bearing Sgt. Pickett's body passed through the village, turned around and passed through again. As it exited the village it passed under two large fire trucks, ladders extended, and a large American flag displayed in honor of Tyler Pickett. A special U.S. Army unit escorts the body of Staff Sgt. Tyler Pickett into Green Funeral Home, Gouvemeur, on Monday. (Dick Sterling photos) The procession continued on to Gouverneur, where emergency vehicles lined the West Main Street bridge to welcome home another war hero. The procession turned onto Park Street, and to Green Funeral Home, where flag bearers from the Legion Riders motorcycle entourage stood by as a military unit waited to carry their fallen fellow soldier into the funeral home. During calling hours on Tuesday, the flags honoring Staff Sgt. Pickett were still visible as many visitors, many wearing military uniforms and brushing away tears, entered and exited the funeral home. Tyler Pickett was laid to rest on Wednesday. .His funeral was held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, in his adopted hometown of Antwerp. Amilitary service was also conducted. A complete obituary for Staff Sgt. Tyler Pickett can be found in this edition of the Tribune Press. Other photos are featured on page 4. Our condolences to his wife Kristy, his parents, and step-children. Flag Day Parade and Chambers 100 th birthday enjoyed by thousands here by Sandy Wyman The old saying is \that everyone loves a parade.\ That adage held steadfast on Saturday, June 14 as the Flag Day parade in Gouverneur came back front and center to Main Street. People were already browsing through the vast array of vendors in the village park by 9am and lawn chairs were being placed for a \birds' eye\ view of bands, floats and marchers set to take the \striding\ steps over the West Main Street Bridge with a start time of 11 am. The Gouverneur Elks held a moving tribute to the meaning of Flag Day with a ceremony at 10:30am featuring a large representation of local Boy Scouts. The Northern Federal Credit Union parking lot was a sea of faces belonging to the younger set with activities helped along with the ever- popular \bouncies.\ Tied to the festival of festivities was the 100\' birthday bash for the Greater Gouverneur Chamber of Commerce. Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava presented the Chamber of Commerce with a New York State Proclamation denoting the organization's century of promoting progress. Then it was time, the beat of drums could be heard in the distance and traffic came to a stop as Gouverneur once again enjoyed a parade. In this year's lineup was a special feature of a huge American flag from the Elks Club borne by countless members of local Girl Scout troops. Bands participating were the Gouverneur Marching Wildcats, director Kathleen Moses, the Heuvelton Marching Bulldogs, director Megan Weber and the Lyme Central School Marching Band, director Michele Bariteau, Various levels of government officials including Gouverneur Mayor Dorothy Vorce, Gouverneur Town Supervisor Bob Ritchie, Gouverneur Town Board member Eldon Conklin, St. Lawrence County Legislator Don Peck and Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava made the political scene familiar. Lawrence Manor escorted 2008 Chamber of Commerce Award of Merit recipient Judy Peck, Bill Lacy with his father's 1939 Model A sponsored the Gouverneur Museum. St. Lawrence County Dairy Princess Alternate Claire Gates of Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Dairy Ambassador Morgan Chambers of Heuvelton were well received by the crowd of well-wishers. Fire departments present were Gouverneur, Richville, Russell and Harrisville with representatives from the Gouverneur Village Police Department and New York State Police maintaining traffic and public safety. Floats and walking units included East Side Universal Pre-K program, Dohnie Horton, the number 1 ticket and button man, a remembrance for Submarine Vets with Dwayne Martin, St. Lawrence Headstart, Gouvemeur Little League, Light the Night Walk, the decked out Pepsi truck, TLS Real Estate, Kinney Drugs (2) 1936 delivery van (Darren Fenlong) and tractor-trailer (Tim Bailey). As they faded into parade rest on Trinity Avenue, it left the biggest part of the day for celebrations that lingered into the evening hours. Flag Day and a 100\' birthday all in one day! Opening the Flag Day observance and parade on Saturday, June 14 with a meaningful ceremony highlighting the event were members of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge assisted by Boy Scouts from the area. (Sandy Wyman photo) By Dick Sterling Gouverneur has always been a caring community. This weekend the friends and families of two local women who are undergoing serious health issues are hoping to help ease the financial burdens associated with the high cost of serious illnesses. From the soaring price of gas to the high cost of food and lodging, not to mention the health costs, it can be very expensive to be sick. A benefit jamboree and spaghetti dinner for Larry and Kelly Marcellus will be hosted by Mullin's Restaurant, Route 11, south, on Saturday, June 21. A benefit spaghetti supper forDeonah Kirkendall and her family has been scheduled for Sunday, June 22, at the Casablanca Restaurant, East Main Street. Saturday's benefit at Mullin's will help the family with traveling expenses as she continues treatments in Syracuse. Bands featured at the jamboree will be Common Ground, Boot Hill and The Rod Dashnaw Band. The benefit will begin at 5 p.m. KELLY MARCELLUS Kelly, a certified nurse assistant worked at Sibley's Nursing Home before she was diagnosed with lung cancer in April. Previously she waged a battle against breast cancer from May of 2006 until April of 2007. Kelly spent her 42 nd birthday, May 19'\ at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, on the cancer floor. Two of the six days she was there were in the critical care unit. She and her husband, Larry were married in 1994. The ouple have three children, David Eaton, 19, Brandon Eaton, 16 and Tacora Marcellus, 14. Kelly enjoys tanning, dancing, modeling, eating ice cream, demolition derbies and planting flowers. DEONAH KIRKENDALL Deonah and her family are also feeling the financial crunch of having to make many trips to SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, Deonah has been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called TTP (Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura). The condition causes blood clots to form in small blood vessels throughout the body. The clots can cause serious problems if they block blood vessels and limit blood flow to the brain, kidneys or heart. TTP is usually treated with infusions of fresh frozen plasma or plasma exchange. Deonah, who is the daughter of Donna Walrath, of Gouvemeur, has to make many trips to Syracuse each week for plasma exchange. Serving of the spaghetti dinner at the Casablanca will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday. There will also be a silent auction and karaoke, which will continue from 9:30 p.m. to 1 am Be sure to do your best to help these two families this weekend. The last thing someone suffering a serious illness needs is the stress caused by financial hardships. We wish both Kelly and Deonah the best in their battles against serious illnesses.
