Page 16 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday June 12,2008 Library campaign nears $348,000 goal By Dick Sterling Not only is the construction project to rehabilitate the loft area at the Gouverneur Reading Room, the public library, located on Church Street, across from the park, ahead of schedule, but the fund drive to pay for the project has also been very well received in the community and beyond. Gale Ferguson, who with Dave Walters, are spearheading the drive, reported last week that recent pledges and generous gifts have pushed the total amount raised to $320,000. An open house to show off the new loft is being held in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce's 100 lh anniversary party and Flag Day Parade on Saturday, June 14. Generous contributions by the Gouverneur Savings and Loan, along with the announcement of $15,000 in support from the Ronald McDonald Charity Foundation were reported during a fundraising wine tasting event recently at Mullin's Family Restaurant. The proceeds from the event, coupled with memorial contributions honoring the Scott/Kuehl families and Charles and Doris Graves, have pushed the total amount pledged to the project to within $28,000 of the $348,000 goal. Work on the project, headed up by Continental Construction, of Gouverneur, has been speeding along for many weeks. The renovations will create much-needed space at the library. \It will provide a new reading area, and a space large enough to better accommodate children during some of the many popular programs offered at the library,\ said Mr. Ferguson. \Currently if the library brings in a special guest and a large crowd is expected, we have to hold the event at another location, which kind of defeats the purpose of it being a library event,\ said Mr. Ferguson. \I've been very pleased with the response of the community. It certainly speaks clearly about what the people of the Gouverneur area think of its library. They have welcomed this much-needed project with open arms.\ Kurt Hartle and Steve Deshane, workers for Continental Construction, Gouverneur, were busy with the ongoing loft construction project at the Gouverneur Library early this week. Construction on the project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
