Page 15 Gouvcmcur Tribune Press, Thursday June 12, 2008 VBITUKRIZS Lloyd E. Moore CLARE —The funeral for Lloyd E. Moore, 81, of 2522 County Route 27, Clare, was Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Moore's Field airport, County Route 27, town of Clare, with the Rev. Robert Philips, pastor of Ellenburg Depot Wesleyan Church, and the Rev. William Huckle officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Degrasse, where there was a \flyby\ of general aviation aircraft, led by Mr. Moore's Cessna Skylane flown by his nephew Wayne Lincoln in the fallen pilot position. Mr. Moore died Friday, June 6,2008, in Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, where he had been admitted earlier in the day. Arrangements were with Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton. Born April 11,1927, in the town of Pierrepont, son of Howard Strang and Catherine Beatrice Chase Moore, he graduated from Colton High School in 1942. He was inducted into the Army on Sept. 8,1950, and was honorably discharged Sept. 8,1952. He married Kathryn May \Kay\ Wallace on April 28, 1957, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Watertown. From 1947 until 1950, Mr. Moore worked for the St. Lawrence County Highway Department, contracting his truck to the county and working as a grader operator and grader foreman. From 1952 to 1991, he worked at the Newton Fails Paper Mill, retiring as millwright superintendent in 1991 because of a stroke. It was also at that time he was no longer able to pass the Federal Aviation Administration flight physical medical examination for the private pilot license he earned in 1964. That year he bought land in the town of Clare on County Route 27 and built an airport for his first airplane, a Stinson 108. His longtime friend Kenneth Giffin helped build the facility. The airport evolved into a landmark that is well-known today as Moore's Field, affectionately called \Clare International Airport\ by many locals and pilots alike. TheFAA has recognized the field for more than three decades as identifier 1E8. The airport has been used by the Army and general aviation flight instructors for night helicopter training missions and landing on grass strips. It also has been used to recover injured people in the remote sections of the western Adirondacks. The airport is home to 10 to 12 general aviation airplanes owned by people from Russell, Edwards, Star Lake, Canton, Potsdam and Ogdensburg, as well as Mr. Moore's Cessna Skylane, which he purchased in 1970. For several years, he hosted a \fly-in\ barbecue that would be attended by many non-Moore's Field-based airplanes and more than 150 people, many ' of them constituents of his legislative district. He enjoyed taking aerial photographs of his constituents' homes and property. Mr. Moore became town justice of Clare in 1961 and also served as town councilman until 1968, when he became town supervisor. He served on the St. Lawrence County Board of Supervisors until 1973 and then was elected to the Board of Legislators, where he served through 2006. He was chairman of the board when the decision to expand the County Courthouse was made. Mr. Moore was chairman of the Community Development Program board at the time the building was built on Commerce Lane and was chairman of the 911 committee at the time the sheriff's department, state police and Civil Defense Department were combined in the same building. He was a member and current chairman of the Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board, was chairman of the town of Clare- Republican Committee and served on the Environmental Council, St. Lawrence County Cooperative Extension, Forest Practice Board, Regional Forest Practice Board, Open Space Committee, St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety Board and St. Lawrence County Public and Private Land Recreation Advisory Board. An avid hunter, he was a life honorary member of the Stillwater Club of Canton, where he also served as watchman for several years. For many years, he hosted the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators' annual summer picnic at the North Branch of the Stillwater Club.
