Williamson Nancy Griffith CANTON —A memorial service for Dorothy Jessie Babcock, 96, United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, will be at 1 p.m. July 12 at the family home, 70 Little River Road, Canton, with the Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro, pastor of Canton Presbyterian Church, officiating. Mrs. Babcock died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Green Funeral Home, Hermon. Born March 3, 1912, in Gouverneur, daughter of John and Clara (Sayerson) Blevins, she graduated in 1928 from Hermon School and attended Potsdam Normal School, where she became a teacher. She married Philip A. Babcock on July 24,1931, at his parents' home in Hermon. After retiring in 1969, the couple enjoyed trips to the countryside. Mr. Babcock died in 2005. Mrs. Babcock taught in Hermon for a year before her marriage. She was ahomemaker and a partner in her husband's egg business and farm. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and making quilts and bread. She was a foster parent, teaching city children in the summers. Surviving are four daughters and two sons-in- law, Gwendolyn James, Fort Mitchell, Ky., Barbara Ferguson, Covington, Ky., Lenora and John deRoos, Boonville, and Marilyn and Joseph Brabaw, Mesa, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren, 23 great- grandchildren, five great-great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Three sisters, Donna McPherson, Doris Jurkovich and JoAnn McGinnis, a brother, Leland Blevins, a son- in-law, Melvin James, a great- granddaughter and two nieces died before her. Donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or Philip Babcock Scholarship Fund at Hermon-Dekalb Central School. Michael W. Zikos A funeral Mass for Michael W. Zikos, 53, Gouverneur, was said. Monday, June 9, 2008, at St. James Catholic Church, Gouverneur, with the Rev. Floyd J. \Jerry\ Bleaux officiating. Burial was in the old St. James Cemetery. Mr. Zikos died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at Cheshire Medical Center, Keene, N.H. He had been ill with cancer. Arrangements were with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Born December 5, 1954, in Queens, a son of George and Ann (Gluzinski) Zikos, he graduated from Notre Dame School in New Jersey. He married Carol L. Dafoe on June 21, 1984. The couple lived in New Jersey before moving to DeKalb, then to Gouverneur. Mr. Zikos was a sewage plant operator for the village of Gouverneur from 1986 until retiring in 2002. He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening, Halloween decorating and watching football. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Timothy W., Gouverneur; a daughter, Terry A. Zikos, Gouverneur; a stepson, Jeremy R. Dafoe, Gouverneur; his mother, of Syracuse; two brothers, John, Pocono, Pa., and Joseph, Chicago, 111.; four sisters, Cathy Zikos, Keene, N.H., Mary Zikos, Princeton, N.J., and Nancy and Rosie Zikos, both of Syracuse, and a granddaughter. Two brothers, George and Thomas, and a sister, Theresa Zikos, died before him. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6725 Lyons St., P.O. Box 7, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057-0007. EDWARDS—The funeral for Frances Myrtle \Franki\ Williamson, 45, Edwards, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. The body will be cremated. Her ashes will be kept by her long-time partner Laurie Anne Brown. Ms. Williamson was found dead Thursday evening, June 5, 2008, on Fox Farm Road in Gouverneur. Cause of death is pending autopsy results. A calling hour will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Born April 1, 1963, in Aurora, 111., daughter of Floyd M. and Carol Ovitt Williamson, she attended several schools throughout the country and received a general equivalency diploma. She married Laurie Anne Brown on Sept. 6, 2006, in Toronto, Ontario. They lived in Beltsville, Md., before moving to Edwards in 2007. She had been a self- employed auto mechanic and most recently had worked as assistant manager for A.T. Systems armored car service in Bowie, Md. She enjoyed motorcycling and collected HarleyJDavidson memorabilia, including die-cast motorcycles, was a NASCAR enthusiast and fan of Dale Earnhart Jr., and collected die- cast cars. She also enjoyed tinkering in her garage, fishing and she loved her dogs. Surviving besides her partner are her father and stepmother, Floyd M. and Judy Williamson, Ellington, Mo,; her mother, Carol Jenkins, Lebanon, Va.; a daughter, Franchisca Williamson, Olney, Md.; four brothers and three sisters-in-law; Terry W. and Michelle Williamson, Adamsville, Ala., Randy and Betsy Williamson, Friendsville, Tenn. ; Ernie and Rhonda Jenkins, Pasadena, Md., and Robert L. Jenkins, Bristol, Tenn; three sisters and their husbands, Cynthia L. and Jerry Wayne Deel, Vansant, Va-., Nancy and Donald \Slick\ Osborne, Lebanon, Va., and Melissa and Eric Troutman, Concorde, N.C., and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. John Burke The funeral for John Burke, 78, South Gordon Street, Gouverneur, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14,2008, at St. James Catholic Church, Gouverneur. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Mr. Burke died Tuesday, June 10,2008, at his home. Phelps, 55, of Whiting, Indiana, and formerly of Gouverneur, will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2008, at 11 a.m., at Spragueville Cemetery. Mr. Phelps died on March 5, 2008, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Lloyd G. Grandy HERMON - A graveside service for Lloyd G. Grandy, 84, of Hermon, will be held on Sunday, June 15,2008, at 2 p.m., at Homestead Cemetery, Grandy Road, Hermon, with military honors. Mr. Grandy, a retired Air Force lieutenant and hobby farmer, died February 15,20O8. Arrangements were with Green Funeral Home, Hermon. The funeral for Nancy Griffith, 55, Elmdale, will be at 11 a,m. Thursday, June 12,2008, at Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with the Rev. Carol Bain, pastor of Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be mRiverside Cemetery. Mrs: Griffith died Sunday, June 8,2008, from a heart attack at University Hospital, Syracuse. Born July 3, 1952, in Gouverneur, a daughter of Ross and Ruby (Storie) .Marcellus, she graduated in 1970 from Indian River High School, Philadelphia. She married George Griffith on August 1, 1969, at Gouverneur United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stanley E. Brown officiating. Mrs. Griffith was employed in a suit factory in\ Winchester, Va.; in reception and billing at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur at the Gouverneur Great American Supermarket and at Gouverneur Central School. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers, traveling and camping, especially at Yellow Lake. Surviving besides her husband are a son and his wife, Bryan and Jessica, Gouverneur; two daughters and a son-in-law, Laura and Michael Schneller, DePeyster, and Sarah Griffith, Gouverneur; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Elma and Fred Hall Sr., Antwerp, and Diane Phelps, and her companion, Gilbert Gerber, Hailesboro; a brother-in-law, Harlow Wood, Oxbow; five grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. Her mother, Ruby Marcellus, died on Thursday, June 5, 2008. A sister, Francis Wood, also died before her. Donations may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Central New York Chapter, 401 N. Salina St., Syracuse, NY. 13203. Ruby L Marcellus OXBOW — The funeral for Ruby L. Marcellus, 87, Oxbow, was Monday, June 9, 2008, at Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with the Rev. James R. Warrington, pastor of Macomb Community Wesleyan Church, officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Mrs. Marcellus died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur. Born July 10, 1920, in Elrndale, daughter of Clinton and Elma (Campbell) Storie, she attended schools in Elmdale and Gouverneur. She married Ross C. Marcellus on September 10, 1936, atBrasie Corners. He died June 5, 1969. A later marriage, to Howard L. Hitsman, ended in divorce. HediedAugust5,2000. Mrs. Marcellus and her husband, Ross, owned and operated dairy farms in Oxbow from 1936 to 1969, when Mr. Marcellus died. She them worked in the office of Empire Livestock, Gouverneur, and Fobare Livestock, DeKalb, for 20 years. She also operated Yellow Lake Campsite, Gouverneur, for 34 years. Mrs. Marcellus was a member of Oxbow First Presbyterian Church and Antwerp Rebekah Lodge 16. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time at Yellow Lake. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Elma and Fred Hall Sr., Antwerp, and Diane Phelps, and her companion, Gilbert Gerber, Hailesboro; two sons-in-law, Harlow Wood, Oxbow and George Griffith, Elmdale; a sister, Isabelle Graves, Gouverneur; 10 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren, two step- great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. A daughter, Frances M. Wood, two brothers, Gordon H. and John Storie, and two grandsons died before her. Her daughter Nancy Griffith, Elmdale, died Sunday, June 8, 20O8. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Elizabeth E. Rogers THREE MILE BAY - A memorial service for Elizabeth E. Rogers, 89, Zephyrhills, Florida, a Watertown native and longtime resident of Three Mile Bay, will be held at a later date at Three Mile Bay First Baptist Church. Burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery. Mrs. Rogers died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the Sunbelt Nursing Home, Zephyrhills, Florida. Born in Watertown, June 25, 1918, the only child of Lyle and Eva Eddy. She graduated from Watertown High School and the Mercy School Of Nursing, Watertown. She married George Rogers, of Three Mile Bay, June 3,1940. The couple lived there until 1978, when they moved to Zephyrhills. They had just celebrated their 68 th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Rogers worked for many years as a nurse for Dr. James Crossley. She was also the administrator of the Jefferson County Home for the Aged, in Watertown. Mrs. Rogers was a member, of the First Baptist Church, of Zephyrhills. She enjoyed golfing and knitting. Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Mary Millage, and her husband Robert, Vermillion, South Dakota, and Carol Jenne, and her husband Earl, Antwerp; a son, John Rogers, and his wife Sally, Clayton; eight grandchildren and 22 grandchildren.
