Lewis County appeared to suf- fer the most damage. The tree above toppled onto Sonny Bullock's house on Route 24 outside of Edwards. The worst of the damage in that area was along Route 27 between Degrasse and South Russell. (Nancy McConnell photo) GHS Golf Team 4 th at Sectionals By Al Douglass The Gouverneur High School golf team completed its season last week with a fourth place finish in the Section 10 Tournament held at the Potsdam Town and Country Club. Leading the Wildcats was Nick Sterling, who earlier in the day was selected to First Team All Northern, who shot a score of 80. Other Gouverneur scores for the day were: Dustin Lallier 87, Sam Sterling 97, Jeremy Phelps 98, Chris Alguire 99, and Storm Blackburn 111. Potsdam took the title on its home course with an 18- hole total of 390. Nick Miller of Potsdam led all scorers with a five under par 67. Second place went to Massena with 398. Other team scores were: Malone 43 5, Gouverneur 461, Canton 498, and OFA 528. Sterling and Lallier qualified for the medalist round on Saturday that would determine the nine players who would advance to the State Tournament in Ithaca. Sterling tied for the ninth spot after his second day 83. In the playoff with Zach Meade of Tupper Lake, and Matt Supernault of Massena. Sterling got eliminated on the first hole when his tee shot found the woods. Meade's par on the second hole gave him the final spot on the Section 10 state team. The Wildcats had their most successful season in the past five years as they finished the regular season with a 4- 5-1 record. The Wildcats posted wins over OFA and Canton twice, and edged Malone by two shots for their fourth win. The Cats had a disappointing tie with OFA at their home course Deerfteld Country Club. The outlook for 2009 is very positive as the Wildcats have all starters returning. Sterling, Lalliier, and Chris Alguire will be entering their fifth season of Varsity golf. Nat Burgess and Matt Weaver will be in their fourth year. Sam Sterling, and Jeremy Phelps will be in their third year. Newcomers Storm Blackburn, Kyle Waugh, and Talan Weekes will also be looking to qualify for one of the six positions. This, year's team was coached by Al Douglass and Ken Hurst. Nick Sterling, Sam Sterling, and Dustin Lallier participated in the Craig Chisum Memorial Tournament in Malone. The tournament is a prep for State play and brings together the top three golfers from teams from Section 10 and Section 7. Nick posted the second best score of the day with a 77. Casting call The stellar cast of the GHS Theatre Arts Class took the Charles George \comedy for the fair sex in one act\ to new heights on Wednesday, June 4 \When Shakespeare's Ladies Meet\ combining Elizabethan dialogue with modern idioms. (Sandy Wyman photo) Maggie Simmons, daughter of Harold and Amy Simmons, Gouverneur, graduated cum laude with a degree in Biology from St. Lawrence University on Sunday, May 18. She will be attending the University of Kansas in the fall studying Geology. She has accepted a Teaching Assistantship position at the University. While at St. Lawrence Maggie traveled to North Dakota in 2007 for the month to help the North Dakota Geological Survey unearth a Mosasaur and Triceratops. She also helped in the museum cataloging, organizing and cleaning specimens. Maggie spent a year and a half conducting a study on fossil chironomids, which are a mosquito-like insects. The chironomids were used as paleotemperature indicators. This study was done as independent research and a senior thesis. On Saturday.June 14, the St Lawrence River Raiders will be hosting their First Annual Fastpitch Softball Tournament at the Gouverneur Recreational Fields, with games starting at 9 a.m. and playing throughout the day with the last games starting at 7 p.m. The teams feature Section X \All Northern\ selections Casey Donnelly from Heuvelton, Jenna Weaver from Gouverneur, and Jessica Meashaw from Hammond along with Section III Frontier League All Star selections Katie Jones, Sarah Johnson, and Jessica Dobson-Tufo from Carthage. The tournament will be run in a round robin format with the River Raider teams playing three games each. The St Lawrence River Raiders 16 and under team will face the Watertown Styxx at 9a.m., the CNY Pink Panthers at 3 p.m., and Beaver River at 7 p.m. The 18 and under Raider team will play St Lawrence Central at 9 a.m., Mohawk Valley Mystics at 3 p.m., and the Canadian Kanata Pirates at 5 p.m. Both teams feature players from Section X, Section III, as well as Canada. With teams traveling from as far away as Syracuse, Utica, St. Regis Falls and Canada. Tournament directors hope to provide a fun, enjoyable, and memorable day for players and spectators in conjunction with the Gouverneur Chamber's 100 th anniversary celebration on Saturday.
