EdwmdsArea Demo By Nancy Given-McConnell Dust, fenders, wheels and tempers will 1 rev-up June 1, at the annual Lion's Club Demolition Derby that starts at noon at their field. ABUSY WEEKEND Saturday evenings usually includes squealing tires leaving skid marks on the new Main Street ipavement, ATV's standing on \their hind legs\ and folks standing on the streets sharing their week. Last Saturday there was a choice of three social events, all going on at the same time, while the little village came alive with decorations, music and a lot of good vittles. On the Iresidder corner at Maple and Main, tents, RV's and a roasting pig welcomed friends and family of RJ Tresidder, who was celebrating graduation from college and the opening of his new business, formerly owned for years by his Dad Roger. More about that next week. On up Main Street was the Given-Mullaney exchange of wedding vows at the United Methodist Church, complete with colorful balloons flying from the Rassell fire truck as it alerted the community of the Page 13 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday May 22, 2008 news for June 1 st event with the air horn blasting down Main Street. The American House was alive and brimming over with well-wishers celebrating Stewart and Donna Soper's combined 70th birthdays, Anyone who wasn't tuckered out could go on down the road 10 miles to the Atkinson Family performance at the Russell Theatre and the newly weds wedding reception at the fire hal}. The Atkinson family of Harrisville entertained a near- full house with two hours of bluegrass, several vocals written by family members and humorous excerpts of family bus road trips at the Russell Opera House last Saturday evening. The traditional complimentary table of fancy desserts, cookies and coffee were offered at intermission. Evah Foster took charge of the hot butter popcorn from their old time wheel-about popcorn wagon The Russell theatre will have their second summer performance June 7 when the local Northbound band will entertain with rock and roll tunes. READYFORTHEBIG SALE? The standard question of \What have you been up to this week?\ has pretty much echoed an answer of \I've had my head in a closet, basement storage area, and drawers picking and sorting for the town wide yard sale June 7 and 8.\ It sounds like come rain or shine it will offer many choices of things shoppers can't live without. YEAROFTHELELAC Everywhere you look this spring can be found a beautiful lilac bush with more blooms and varieties of shades of purple or white than has been enjoyed in recent years around the area. Is this another indication of global warming ? Next month will also bring forth something we haven't seen in 17 years, when the adult Cicadas emerge from the ground to find a mate and then die all within a few weeks. The cycle will begin when the nymphs hatch in tree twigs, fall to the ground, and burrow in to feed on roots for the next 17 years. I recall the scenic route along the St. Lawrence River is one of the most highly infested when it comes to windshield visibility. A windshield washing solution could be a sell dut on most any street corner that week. EFDOPENHOUSE The Edwards Volunteer Fire Department will host an open house on Friday May 23, from 5 to 8 p.m., to introduce their new ambulance that has passed state inspection and approved for emergency service calls. SOLONGFATHERJERRY Father Jerry will be leaving Sacred Heart and St. James Catholic churches in the near future. OFF TO WASHINGTON D.C The Edwards-Knox Close Up group who Worked hard to raise funds for their end of year trip are enjoying a week in Washington D.C. LENNOXSALE Another Village of Edwards chapter of the past Stewart & Donna Soper of Edwards celebrated their 70th birthdays in Edwards last weekend. (Photo by Nancy McConnell) was closed when a large group of bidders converged at the Marion Lennox home on First Street, last Sunday to acquire the beautiful Depression glass, antique Singer treadle sewing machine (Just like new) and household goods in mint condition at a Don Peck auction. Marion lived at that address for 60 years and is already missed during the nice spring days sitting on the front porch in her wicker rocker that found a new home with a bidder. <ff|| Heafiitg/f^ooiiris Group Emeryville Bridge discussed at Fowler Council meeting By Nancy Given- McConnell Ownership of the Emeryville Bridge has been a topic of question between the Town of Fowler and St. Lawrence County since the county claimed responsibility for some bridges back in the 1970's. The Emeryville Bridge was not inchidecl on the county inventory at that time, even though it supposedly met county measurements. Councilman Michael Cappellinorequested New York State Department of Transportation Bridge Management Engineer John Disbro attendthe May 13, town board meeting to clarify some of the board's concerns. Mr. Disbro advised even though the bridge was not included in the county inventory, it is still susceptible ii to posting and conditions dictated by St. Lawrence County. He advised the bridge has been rated a .3,3-ton limit it has a lot of redundancy, would need structural work but has a lot of useful life left in it, and he does not anticipate closure of the structure in the very near future. Postal structural flags designate conditions of the bridge; a one posing danger, 2; structural (yellow) serious and must be addressed prior to next inspection 3; red flag closure within 60 days. Superintendent William H. Lutz advised per phone call that the bridge was scheduled to be inspected May 21, which could determine the status. Matilda Larson representing the St. Lawrence County Planning office presented an update on a grant available through the Governor's Office for Small Cities for upgrading select projects in the community. She recommended a committee of at least 10 to serve on a board\ to review and recommend priority projects. Several complaints of free roaming dogs prompted Supervisor William H. Lutz to ask Animal Control Officer Daniel Moyer to meet with the board to address the issues. A highway department employee expressed \no action has been taken by the Dog Control Officer-on dogs- of all kinds, running loose all the time in the area where I am picking roadsides, who is responsible for a dog bite the town or the owner?\ He-was informed an owner is responsible.. Mr. Moyer advised the first offense is a warning, the second a ticket is issued. Mr: Moyer can be reached at 535- 4180 or 771-8103. He claimed complaints of barking dogs in Hailesboro can only be addressed if someone signs a complaint. The Town of Fowler Attorney will move forward on Edwards meetings held By Nancy Given- McConnell The Edwards Town Board held a 15-mlnute monthly meeting on May 14. The only business addressed was a brief xipdate on highway matters that included highway employees attending an eight-hour mine safety course, and mention of an audit to be done in the near future. Three village residents attended the public hearing for review and acceptance of the 2008-09 Edwards village budget held prior to the regular monthly meeting. Roger R_oyce requested the board address a storm drain and a portion of a collapsed sidewalk that has washed out at his property on Maple Avenue. Mayor Jan Lennox advised the matter would be visually addressed by the board and, repairs would be in order. A suggestion was made by a village resident to apply for a feasibility study grant to cover the costs of determining combining village and town as is being done in several other towns and villages. Trustee Whitmarsh commented, \We already share some combined services that seem to be working out rather well.\ A motion was approved to contact Senator Aubertine on a grant prior to committing to a merge. A motion was approved to re-levy unpaid water and sewer bill to the St. Lawrence County Treasures office. Trustee Phil Soper had concerns regarding cleaning up yards and structures within the village. No solution was offered. Highway Superintendent Gary Williams reported skinned and decayed beaver carcasses are being dropped off near town roads which in turn means his men have the responsibility of picking up and burying them. He advised St. Lawrence County Highway Department quoted a price of $60,000 to pave North Woods Road.
