Page 8 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday April 24,20O8 Joint meeting enjoys artistry of Hazel Tyrrell By Sandy Wyman The joint luncheon meeting of the Gouverneur Garden Club (host), Shakespeare Club and Arts Club held on Thursday, April 10 at Gentry's saw over 40 members from all three units in attendance. Many seated belong to more than one of these stellar organizations that have in one form or another graced the landscape and artistic obligations for over a century. Guest speaker, Gouverneur Garden Club member Mary Jo Whalen, president of the Canton Garden Club portrayed her personal visits to Hazel Tyrrell, the \Pierrepont Birdwoman,\ who passed away in 1967. She was a master carver and painter of native birds that now command not only high prices but also within that realm left a legacy that has made the North County even richer in history. A table of wonder graced the middle of the luncheon seating, full of the distinctive and alluring pieces of Americana that ties a name forever into the senses of the strive for perfection. In the last 22 years of this woman's life after retiring from the family farm in the Cooks Corners area of Pierrepont, Hazel practiced and mastered the fine art of carving and painting in stunning lifelike detail between six and seven thousand birds of sizes and descriptions as varied as the avian population would allow. Three doze'n plus individuals experienced \first hand the inspired expressions of an artist. Lovingly handled with care so that even the finest detail of the trademark twisted wire feet could be committed to memory, Mary Jo's collection and personal knowledge made the treasures carved mostly with pocketknives alive once again with the scene of Hazel Tyrrell at her kitchen table with just a kerosene lamp and her dog at her feet. Although tiny and had crafted of wood with the brilliant hues of nature, who would not be proud to wear a pin of this description, a Hazel Tyrrell original, one of the many treasures shown and shared by Mary Jo Whalen at the three club joint luncheon that took place oh Thursday, April 10. The annual tradition of the Mother's Day Luncheon sponsored by the church's Friendship Class that has taken placed for more than forty years has invited two most special guests to share in the day. The hostesses for this year's bash are Linda K. Brown, Joanne McQuade, Doris Putman, Audrey Skelton and Karen Taylor. These ladies have been in charge for the past decade and each year give a little twist to the menu that the attendees have come to love. The program will include a Richville gal who has a beautiful singing voice in the persona of Karen Ax. Her delivery and musical choices are high on everyone's list of favorites. The other guest appearance was made possible when President of the Friendship Class Linda K. Brown receiving a call from Romayne Hartshorn about the possibility of having the senator make an appearance. Everything worked out and the Friendship Class special guest will be in attendance.
