(Sandy Wyman photo) liiifii Page 2 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday April 24,2008 Zack Leader sees the Pope in New York Continued from page 1 stopped all traffic for the shuttles on their way to see the Pope. Once we got off the shuttles we were brought through security. There were thousands of police and even Secret Service agents all throughout the area. Metal detectors and searches were conducted for security reasons. By this time many were very excited. Our seats were very close to the stage and camped out at nearly 10 a.m. We would not leave these spots until roughly 6:30 p.m. For the countless hours various Christian artists and bands from all over the country entertained us. Bands such as Three Graces, Third Day and Toby Mac were all present. And, of course, the one thing everyone was mostly excited for (besides the pope of course) Kelly Clarkson. The concerts were amazing. Also we saw our own bishop Cunningham of the Diocese or Ogdensburg. We were surrounded by thousands of priests and seminarians, some of whom we knew personally. Priests playing footbalL and Frisbee were very funny sights to see. And despite the intense heat the hours passed very quickly and enjoyably. Finally they announced that the Pope was on his way. On the big screen they showed him getting out of his limo just over the hill, less than a mile away. At first seeing him on the big screen just seemed normal, like watching him on TV and despite the concerts and all the pure excitement didn't hit me until the 25,00O youth were cheering insanely while the popemobile rolled around the corner. The Pope got up on the stage and tried to quiet the crowds. Every time he tried to quiet us everyone erupted in more cheering, clapping, and waving of the white and yellow flags. You could see the excitement not only in the faces of the youth, but in the Pope himself. Once the crowds had died down we all sang Happy Birthday to the pope in our best German accents and even in German, that we had been practicing all day. The Pope's face beamed with joy One of the most memorable things that the pope said, in his very strong German accent, \I'd like to thank you for my a happy birthday.\ The crowd, once again, erupted in applause and admiration. All who were listening hung on his every word. Some still could not believe that he was really here, in the United States, right in front of them. And after his very long and inspiring speech to the youth and young seminarians of America, he got up and we thought he was leaving. Instead after being told by his advisors and Cardinals, he sat back down once again and said, \I forgot the Spanish part.\ After the 'Spanishpart' was all over he said his final blessings along with receiving gifts. There was a recessional song played and immediately once the popemobile was out of sight the crowd started to rapidly disperse. We finally made it back to our shuttle bus (once again got on quickly because of my 'disability') and got back to our bus to go home. After a quick stop at a rest stop we were back on the road home. We eventually arrived back at Seton Catholic at around 3 a.m. the next morning. It was a full 24 hours of nonstop excitement and craziness. Hearing the pope speak was truly a life-changing and ultimate experience. His message was inspiring. I am grateful to all who made it possible for this experience, not only for myself, but for everyone that had the privilege of going. Ryan's GBW By Sandy Wyman An evening out for a ham dinner with all the trimmings at the Gouverneur Elks Club on Saturday, April 19 proved once again that this area community is dedicated to the cause of helping others. It was the night df Ryan's Team and Team Bonnie C. \teaming\ up to 'generate income for the Gouverneur Business Women's Breast Cancer Program. \teams\ up for Cancer Program These teams are part of the Edward I. Moses Walk/ Run for Life that has over its 30 years raised three quarters of a million dollars that benefits cancer patients who live in St. Lawrence County. The organization matches number amounts at events to other groups involved in the battle against the ravishing disease in all forms. Last year at the 6 lh annual GBW Breast Cancer Walk the total was $46,000 and according to Breast Cancer Executive Committee Member Marilyn LaPierre, the fund Was able to help over 150 different people and families. By the first of this year, the fund was done to less than $1,000 and the wait would have been on to May for the next fundraiser. The foundation pays out matching grant funds in January of each year and the Breast Cancer Executive Committee received $10,000 that immediately was dispersed to numerous individuals in need of assistance. Saturday night's \take\ will be applied for the 2009 season where it is hoped that another generous gift will find its way to the GBW Breast Cancer Fund to alleviate some of the expenses incurred as women valiantly put up a \fight\ for a cure.
