Page 13 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday April 24, 2008 Wildcat golf team to open season on Monday By Al Douglass ^# I # The Gouverneur High School Golf team opens its 2008 season with a home match against Ogdensburg. The golf team broke through in the win column last season after three straight winless seasons. The team is optimistic that it can be in the upper half of Section 10 this season. The team returns all starters from last season. Leading the team will be Junior Nick Sterling. Nick was selected to second team All Northern last season, and was in the top 20 in last year's Section 10 Tournament. Also returning will be juniors Dustin Lallier, Brandon Raymo, and Chris Alguire. All four of these boys have been members of the team for the past three seasons. Adding more experience to the team are sophomore Nat Burgess and Matt Weaver. Nat and Matt are in their third year on the golf team. Freshman Sam Sterling also will be returning from last season's team. Sam was impressive as an eighth grader. Also looking for spots in the starting lineup will be Kyle Spilman, .Matt Todd, Josh Girard, Jeremy Phelps, Jordon Phelps, Storm Blackburn, Trevor Carr, Tyler Gleason, TJ Gore, Drew Leonard, Damin Sawyer, Kyle Waugh, and Talon Weekes. Twenty players will be qualifying this week to see who will fill the six. spots in the starting lineup, Play should be very competitive. This year the Massena Red Raiders will be the overwhelming favorite to repeat as Section 10 champions. The Red Raiders return five of six players. Potsdam and Malone should battle the Raiders for top spot. The Wildcats are optimistic, that they can compete with the top teams in the league. The Wildcats schedule includes four home matches. Gouverneur opens the season on April 28 against Ogdensburg, will host Massena on May 2, hosts a tri-match with Canton and Malone on May 5, and hosts Potsdam on May 7.
