Three honored by local VFW Page 3 Gouverneur Tribune Press, Thursday March 20, 2008 By Robin Jarboe The annual awards banquet hosted by Gouverneur VFW Post #6338 was held Saturday, March 1, with a good showing despite the sleet and icy weather conditions. Liberation Forces Veteran Donald Payne was honored by VFW members, DADS associates recognized Tim Hall, and unfortunately Auxiliarian Stella Tamblin was not feeling well enough to get out in the unpleasant March weather to attend the event. Maurice \Buster\ Sullivan presented the DADS award on behalf of all the group's members and was very proud and pleased to acknowledge Tim. It was noted that Tim is always one of the first to volunteer to help whenever an event is in the planning stages. Tim has a son who served in our country's military, and Tim serves the DADS, VFW, Ladies Auxiliary, and Men's Auxiliary units by doing whatever he can to assist them. The recipient thanked everyone for the honor bestowed upon him. Ladies Auxiliary President Robin Jarboe stated the ladies honoree Stella Tamblin was unable to attend and she would deliver the plaque to her at home. Stella's husband Hank served the U.S. in Korean Wartime, her son Robert, Jr. spent 20 years in the service, and Stella serves in more ways than one to the Ladies Auxiliary and numerous-other societies around town. Stella gave this message: \Thanks to all of you. I think it's wonderful and wish the weather was different so I could have been there.\ Mr. Sullivan said he has known Donald Payne for over 60 years and it has been a pleasure knowing him and sharing many good times at SylviaLake. He jokingly added that Don threatened to tell stories on him if he told specific stories about Don, so Mr. Sullivan opted to be careful. Don's wife, Memory, thanked Marie for introducing them and retold the joke Al. Redmond told her long ago which she'll never forget. He said, \you know, Don wakes up with a memory everyday but you wake up with a,pain.\ Memory also read emails received from her sons about the willingness of Don to always help no matter how many hours he had to drive to help them move or have some household repairs done. Andrew and Russell noted how Don seems to work as hard as ever even though he is retired, by helping them in building tree houses and swing sets, putting in garbage disposals, electrical outlets, performing tune-ups on push or riding mowers, chainsaws, weed whackers, and spending a entire week wheeling and distributing mulch around their home and trees. They consider their step- dad \a very jolly fellow with a nice wit and common sense\ and cannot thank him enough for all he has done for them. Mr. Payne thanked everyone for coming to this honor. He said, \I've met a lot of nice people in my life and somel even consider friends. Thanks for helping me celebrate.\ The post's guest speaker was Harold \Hal\ Burke, PSC, Department of New York State quartermaster. He attended with his wife, Carol from their hometown of Rotterdam. Hal served the U.S. Army in Vietnam from November 1967 through June 1969. Since his first attendance of an awards dinner at the local post in 1998, he noted \things haven't changed much in that the club always exemplifies what the VFW is about.\ \It's the community, friendship, and intermingling with other groups such as. the American Legion which makes a group thrive.\ He presented a citation from NYS VFW President Robert Barnhart to Don in recognition of his unselfish service to veterans. Each recipient also received a citation from the New York Assemblywoman Deirdre Scozzafava for their \exemplary service to their community whether through participation in voluntary programs or unique personal endeavors.\ South Edwards By Linda Perry Palm Sunday was recognized in the churches across our region as well as nationally, ushering in Holy Week. Maundy Service is Thursday, March 20 (tonight) at the Edwards Church at 7pm. The Edwards History Association held its meeting on March 12. The same slate of officers was approved. Marge Dier gave a talk on Sally Mitchell and Emery Webb gave on Gladys Cole for the month's program. There was also a •report on artifacts received by the museum. Area residents enjoyed the production, \You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown,\ at the Clifton-Fine Central School on March 13 and 14. A warm welcome home to Kermit Jones who has had a lengthy hospital stay this winter. The \March Madness\ of maple syrup production has begun. In the early 1900's the season was a boost to this area in employment, lasting several weeks.
